I served for 1,214 days from 90-93 but even short time service appears to pay off.
I got a Virginia Military Service ID and just check out the www.militaryandveteransdiscount.com website - registration is required.

(27,640 posts)And plain old vets like me (at least 2 years of service but less than 20) get our 10% discount only on Vets Day. However, my local Lowe's store has always given me the discount every day I've shopped there.

(36,355 posts)I go to the nearby clinic but one of these days, I have to make a trip to the main hospital to get the photo I.D. I should call the local volunteer driver and see the next time he's going to make a run there and catch a ride then.
Lasher
(27,640 posts)Didn't have to to to the main hospital to get it.
Kaleva
(36,355 posts)I wish it did as the clinic is only 46 miles away while the hospital is 137 miles away. Not really a big deal though. I'm on full disability and I have the time to spend a day riding the VA van when other local vets have an appointment there.

(27,640 posts)That's the worst disadvantage with VA health care. Nearest VA hospitals are a long distance away from a lot of people like me. And the VA exacerbates the situation by providing some treatments at only a few hospitals. So if you need a pacemaker, for example, you might end up having to travel much farther away than your nearest VA hospital.

I wasn't aware of best buy, won't matter as I don't buy there anymore anyway.

State lawmakers across the U.S. are crafting legislation that would add military service to veterans' driver's licenses so they will not have to carry official discharge papers to prove their service.
It's a shortcut that legislators say could come in handy, from securing state veterans' claims, to simply getting a military discount at a hotel or retailer.
<snip>
A dozen states passed laws in 2011 adding a veteran designation to driver's licenses, according to Boden: Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.
States pursuing legislation this year include Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey and South Carolina, Boden said.

Notice that this scoop is not real fresh, so other states might have followed suit by now.
On edit, here's some much better information: Veterans ID on Drivers License or ID Card by State

(27,640 posts)You mean my VA photo ID won't work? I use it at Lowe's and anywhere there's a restaurant discount on Vet's Day.

(27,640 posts)Some deals are only for retired soldiers (served 20 years or more), but not for vets who served less than that but at least 2 years.

(53,475 posts)... which must be done before the State will issue you a veteran's ID card (or include the 'veteran' stamp on your driver's license).
The Wisconsin Veteran's card/identifier is a new program effective December 2, 2013.
