Newt: Afghanistan may 'not be doable'

As reports emerged that a dozen Afghan civilians were massacred by a U.S. soldier from a base in southern Afghanistan, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said on Sunday the U.S. mission there may "not be doable."

"I think that we’re risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that may frankly not be doable," the former House speaker said on "Fox News Sunday." "I think it's very likely that we have lost, tragically lost, the lives and suffered injuries to a considerable number of young Americans on a mission that we’re going to discover is not doable. "

Gingrich said his emphasis of energy independence is based in part on his conclusion that some of the problems in the Middle East and the broader area are probably intractable in the near term.

"Look at the things that are going on around the region and then ask yourself: is this in fact a harder, deeper problem that is not going to be susceptible to military force --at least not military force on the scale we’re prepared to do?" Gingrich said, adding that we may "need to decide that the United States is going to have to back off” from the entire region

Well, well, well. Truth staring Newt in the face.

" harder, deeper problem that is not going to be susceptible to military force " Is that what critics have been saying sicnce the beginning?

nothing but death awaits people who invade the place, and the society there has been the same for thousands of years, so invaders will never change it

The terrorists will come in with their money and help the Afghan people rebuild and the cycle will start all over again.

Did you see the movie Charlie Wilson's War? The ending gave me chills when he asked for money to help them rebuild and was laughed at.

We will never learn.

I never got the mission part of Afghanistan, other than smoking OBL out and killing him. We did that last year. President Obama had the perfect moment to pivot and say our mission was done and announce an expedited timeline. Who, on the Republican side, would have argued for staying? For what purpose? The ugliness of the past few weeks have created more problems for our troops and our exit plan will now be politicized by Republicans..."Obama 'lost' Afghanistan. Bullshit, there was never anything to "win" there. But Newt is at least saying something sensible here and I hope Obama will give serious thought to stepping up the timetable to leave. It might be the best gesture we can make in the eye's of Afghani's who look at us as nothing but an occupying force there.

We missed at least two opportunities to disengage ourselves from situations. A quick pull out is better than an announced one in my mind.

I still think that we had to go into Afghanistan. Does anyone think that those responsible for 9/11 would have even been turned over?

At that time, we should have started to withdrawl troops in a upward gradiation. If the administation was not bombarded by right wing traitors, we could have been out of that soul sucking country before the election in november.

15. Call me cynical, but I see this as merely another RW smear of Obama

This is the start of a RW meme that will carry into the campaign using the attack "He wasn't fit to be Commander in Chief and finish the good work begun by George W. Bush. Opportunities were squandered, and now we must get out, all because of President Obama."

Don't go trying to inject facts, reason, or logic. The RW won't hear of it. Won't matter that Dubya turned away from Afghanistan to invade Iraq, the real goal all along. Won't matter that Dubya gave up trying to kill OBL, and it took President Obama only a little over two years to accomplish it.

Also, don't inject Iraq, because they'll have a canned bullshit response for that as well.

"President Bush had all but completed the mission in Iraq. It was wrapped up like a gift and handed to him. Not even he could screw that up."

The Grinch hasn't come to his senses. He is engaged in a political calculation for the fall campaign.

Let's face it, the United States' 'progress' hasn't been going all that well lately.

Pissing on dead enemy soldiers. burning religious material, night raids, done kills and this latest massacre kinda sends the message to the hajjis: Sit down and shut up. We (don't) know what we're doing. But we'll figure it our eventually.
