Racine woman discovers 'mountain of tires' in yard
More than 90 tires dumped in backyard of rental property
RACINE, Wis. A Racine woman said she came home from vacation to discover a mountain of used tires dumped in her backyard.
But while she works to find a way to clean it up, WISN 12 News learned that cases of illegal tire dumping are on rise.
Patty King came to check on her rental property to discover a pile of nearly 90 tires dumped in the yard.
"I saw the tires piled up above the fence," she said. "What do you do? You just feel sick."
Neighbor Tiffany Taborn said she had no idea anyone had dumped the tires next door.
"It's a mountain of tires," she said. "A mountain of tires."
The news got worse when King learned that she would have to pay hundreds of dollars in fees to get rid of the tires. City officials told her that while the situation was unfortunate, the tires were here responsibility since they were on her property.
Ninety tires, combined with a $3 per tire recycling fee, adds up quickly.
"It's overwhelming," she said.
Thankfully Scott Killips and Adam Velasquez heard about King's plight and volunteered to haul away the tires. The city also waived the recycling fee.
