yang that describes the attribute that women possess that is more than men? What is nature's reasons for the differences of the sexes? The yin of femininity vs the yang of masculinity has a purpose and has equal value. We need to find the power in all of the differences and the value of all and stop making physical strength the end all trait that makes some think men have or should have more power.

(10,201 posts)Men are bigger, this is en evolutionary trait. So what? Is being physically larger a good thing? At home all it accomplishes is me having the duty of grabbing stuff off the top shelf. I would not read any further into it than that.
Personally I feel there are things that we cannot look to be on equal footing. It does not make one sex superior or inferior to another.

(18,775 posts)I know lots of women 6' or taller. Dating is an issue because of that social bias.
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)If you step back and look at the average height of women compared to men, the males are taller by a factor of about 1.07. This is across all cultures of all of the people in the world. It's not who we choose, it's who is out there. If the same two parents have one child of each sex, odds are that the male will be taller. You can see this in male / female fraternal twins.
It is a genetic trait, going back tens of thousands of years based on the different tasks that each sex took part in. These same tasks are part of other genetic traits that we have developed. Men get beer bellies. This is actually the trait of a hunter. It is an excellent way for the body to store fat, and still be able to run after something as the male center of gravity is right behind our abdominal muscles. Women tend to gather their fat stores in their lower body. This is another evolutionary trait, theorized that it was important that a female not have a larger stomach, as this would give the impression of being pregnant and would deter a suitor. In a hunter / gatherer society, we used to lose and gain weight quite often.
I don't think social bias has as much to do with it as natural selection. It is so deep in our genetics how we choose a mate, and what we find attractive. Would a 5 foot 8 inch woman be attracted to a 5 foot 4 man? Probably not. Would that man be attracted to that woman? Probably not.
Before the industrial age, the vast majority of folks lived their entire lives within their own culture. Some cultures are taller or shorter than others. There are many reasons for this. Diet, Climate, etc... Go back 1500 years and take a Norse Male and stand him next to an Asian (Chinese) Female. They would be about the same height at about 5 foot 6. Fast forward a few thousand feasts and famines and stand the same two cultures of folks next to each other and you will have about a 10" disparity in average height. Currently the average height of a Norwegian male is 6 foot, and an Asian (Republic of China) female is 5 foot 2 inches. Same two folks, just 1500 years apart.

(37,573 posts)she said she'd dance with her boyfriend who was only 5' 10" and they would get all kinds of crap. Meanwhile her brother who was 6'4" would be dancing with his girlfriend who was 5' 3" and nobody said boo about it.

(47,209 posts)they were expected to slow dance and my brother is very very shy. They were expected to slow dance, and the poor girl actually pressed her chin into- below his belt. He turned deeper red than I'd ever seen, and grabbed a flower girl to do a three way ring dance. Gosh, my sister in law has her head up her ass, they were both so mortified.

They also did much of the gathering in the hunter\gatherer tribes. Something that kept them alive probably more than the hunter stuff.

(18,775 posts)"Men" aren't physically stronger than "Women".
What you probably mean is a statistical number of men are stronger than a statistical number of women.
Comparisons between individual men and women will vary which is why the statement 'men are stronger than women' is meaningless.
I can leg press a lot more weight than my boyfriend. He can bench press more than me. Which of us is stronger?
I'm not nitpicking semantics. These kind of broad gender based statements give rise to all sorts of sexual prejudices and stereotypes.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)Glassunion
(10,201 posts)due to your shorter (then men) average stature and higher (then men) average leg strength, women on average are able to endure a slightly longer level of G-forces then men on average.
So technically, your shorter average height is actually an advantage, further compounded with your greater leg strength advantage. Since your head is closer to your heart, and your ability to squeeze you legs (which have more muscle mass) harder, makes it easier for you to keep blood up in your brain, which prevents you from blacking / graying out.

(37,573 posts)I can almost stack the leg press machine.
You need a boyfriend with stronger legs.
I have, however, not done much bench pressing in about thirty years.
I was bragging. Just some more. And why would I need a boyfriend with stronger legs? The one I have is perfect.

That the average man is stronger than the average woman? What about men who are below average and women who are above average? Doesn't that include a whole bunch of people?

(2,367 posts)"better" is.
Men are on average bigger and physically stronger than women. But there are some women bigger and stronger than some men. Hell there is a substantial quantity of women stronger than the average man. I'm female, 6'2, 210 pounds and fairly fit. I can almost do a dead hang pull ups again. I had to stop for awhile because of a torn rotator cuff, but now I'm very close to being able to do one again. Think most 150 pound men are even close to as strong as I am, especially in lower body strength?
(Yes I know there are a substantial number of 150 pound men stronger than me. However, most could not do a dead hang pull up with a 60 pound weight attached).
Anyway, back on topic. Why does average size/strength or maximum size/strength even better? Yeah men are on average, bigger and stronger.
I'm sure we could come up with all kinds of stuff women are better on average at. Maybe vision, hearing, smell? Art taste? Color perception? Pain tolerance? Better at raising children?***
***Note I am not sure if any of these are true and make no judgement on whether they are or not. But at the end of the day, people are people, regardless of sex or gender, and averages mean nothing. I'm sure you'd rather have me attempt to pull you out of a burning building than a very small or very old or very young man, despite men being on average stronger.

(6,092 posts)it's more of a struggle to determine the value in femininity in a world that values mascalinity at a higher level. I want to pinpoint the equal value and name it and claim it but it is a hard thing to do in a capitalist, humans as commodies economic system. I was looking for a little help from my DU intelectuals.
