Today, we released a video about one dog we rescued froma North Carolina Puppy Dog Mill who has a new, better life since The HSUS Animal Rescue Team members, Jennifer Kulina-Lanese and Tia Pope, and North Carolina state director Kim Alboum, took him into their arms.
Jennifer removed Ricky Bobby, a small, paralyzed dachshund, from the facility. When she picked him up, he was terrified and shaking. Ricky Bobby was among the dogs who required immediate treatment. He had been dragging his non-working legs along a cement floor for so long that he had open sores, inflamed patches, callouses and muscle atrophy throughout his underside and back legs. His hindquarters were covered in urine scalding from being confined to bedding soaked in urine and feces. The condition that paralyzed Ricky Bobby was most likely genetic, but if treated by a veterinarian early, is often reversible.
Ricky Bobby was adopted by Megan, a veterinary technician from CareFirst, the veterinary hospital where he was treated. Before she had even decided to adopt Ricky Bobby, Megan (who calls him RB for short) set to making a wheeled cart to enable RB to get around without hurting his underside. Cobbling together PVC pipe, wheels from a larger cart that didnt fit him, hair ties, a standard small pet harness, and a make-shift sling, Megan gave RB mobility hed likely never had.

(26,467 posts)I kick 10 or 20 bucks to them when I can, but the thrice weekly fundraising letters piss me off. now I get shit from WWF and Peta without me ever signing up for it.
I have more address labels than I can use in a lifetime.

(4,316 posts)I don't have much money to donate lately so I don't get many of those fundraising letters.
A long time ago, I donated frequently to Greenpeace and once a young college age person came to my door for money, and it was almost like I owed it to them, that was the feeling I got. I get some notices from a local humane society and I donated to them about 5 years ago.
I am much more invested in animals now, so I have a lot of sympathy for their advertisements and requests. Also the PetsMart that I go to sometimes has a donation option on their card swiper, which I think is a great invention, giving $1 is easy.

(10,495 posts)That little dude was doing everything a normal dog could as far as mobility and was loving it! I carry my mom's 13 year old dachshund up the stairs every night, help him off couches he used to leap off when he was younger, so I know how it is for that little guy, wonderful!

(9,126 posts)What a beautiful story. I'm so happy that little dog got a chance to feel love and good care, and you can tell he's giving it all back and then some. What a gift for both of them.

(825 posts)She is great. But hates her cart. I ordered one online but it is just too darn heavy. Do you have plans/instructions or maybe good pics of the cart without the dog I could copy?
PM me if you can help.
