It was very sudden and unexpected. He was out playing in the grass and he just dropped and never moved again. My father was here with him. I was out running errands. My husband is devastated and won't be back until Thursday.

(3,238 posts)the loss of my two min pins (Hana & Ipod), sisters who died within two weeks of each other, ten years ago. I loved those two like they were my kids and though I rarely take time off from work, I literally could not function for about a week and could not work because I kept bursting out in tears just thinking about them and yearning to see their wagging tails and beautiful happy faces.....and up until they passed, I had never seen my partner cry and he cried like a baby. I wish you all well during this very painful time.

(15,555 posts)he wasn't just any dog - he was a guide dog! They are very special dogs. I was a puppy raiser for two dogs who went on to become guide dogs for blind people. Was this your husband's first guide dog? Does he have another one now?
I just happen to have a special place in my heart for guide dogs for obvious reasons. Just remember that your dog has a special place in doggy heaven.

(21,211 posts)That said sorry for your loss.
Once my sister went on vacation and I watched her 2 cats. I went over to feed them and the friendly one keep meowing and wouldn't leave me alone. I left and something told me to come back because I didn't see the older cat. I found it dead under my suster's bed. I called my Dad and he came over to take it to the ASPCA. When my sister came back 5 days later she called me from the airport and the first thing she asked were how were the cats. I told her the truth on the phone. She started sobbing and I felt so bad. If you can wait until your spouse gets home and tell him then. Otherwise he will be distressed on his business trip. It would have ruined my sisters vacation if I told her when it happened.

(1,707 posts)Guide dogs are such special dogs. All dogs have unique personalities, but the aspect of being a working dog adds another dimension. It's a very special relationship, and it must be so hard to part.
My sister just told me that she expects her guide dog to only be able to work another couple years. But Kayla, as I suspect your husband's dog was, is a cherished member of the family, and will always remain so.
