Seriously?
Eat Thanksgiving meal and offer a prayer for a turkey who gave his life for us? Gave his life for us? Come on, now.
He didn't give shit for us. He suffered a miserable life and was snuffed out. That's it. I must say, I was sniggering with the family right wingers on this one. If it's criminal to eat a factory-raised turkey (and it is, and I didn't), then just don't do it. Don't say a stupid-ass prayer for the hormone-infested bird. Just eat it. Quit trying to make an ugly situation holy. Why is my family so ass-backwards?
For fuck's sake.
Amen.

(10,926 posts)but they break bread with them every single solitary Thanksgiving.
Odd.

(1,928 posts)Not sure what you're implying, but I know what conclusions I can draw from your post.
In this post, the person offering the prayer would be right at home at DU. I was mocking her, not the right wingers. She's an idiot. So are they, but for different reasons.
Maybe read a little more closely next time--unless most right-wingers you know offer prayers for turkeys.
I was simply lamenting my Thanksgiving. Perhaps ungrateful, I know, fine. At least I don't have cancer. But good lord.

(16,020 posts)A quarter of my family are right wingers. The rest are not. We are family and love each other nevertheless. We have made it a rule to not talk politics at the table after several ugly events and it is working out for us.

(16,184 posts)my family is full of hard core right wingers. However, I love them to death.
I know that's not the same for every family. I'm just lucky that way.

(1,928 posts)yes, you must be God since you know my prayers.
Or maybe you know something I don't since you wrote, wifes'.

(18,101 posts)and those who just accepted the prayer as something some people do, probably had a much better day than those who found it outrageous. Some people just look for reasons to be outraged.
ithinkmyliverhurts
(1,928 posts)Just let it all be.
I'm not outraged. I'm simply defining a perplexing moment today. In fact, I would have felt better had I been outraged. I was imply dumbfounded by the myopia.
Where I come from prayer ought to mean something. You may like people praying for their own prosperity or praying that we overcome the terrorists or praying that Murika be prosperous; I find this all rather stupid--not prayer in general but these prayers in particular. So I guess we disagree. You go pray on that.

(18,101 posts)when we can have humor?
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
(Although known most widely in its abbreviated form above,
the entire prayer reads as follows...)
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.

(1,928 posts)I love Niebuhr and fully comprehend all the good AA has done.
I meant nothing more.
My weakness at this board is assuming that we're all on the same side and have only minor differences. I see here I was wrong. We are really talking the same thing. I harbor no resentment towards my family and lover her dearly and yet still think her prayer is stupid beyond belief. I try to hold two thoughts in my mind at the same time. I realize not all can do that, so that when I'm being irascible but playful only the negative comes out. Maybe it's just the medium.
But your shaming device has worked wonders. Thank you, sir. Can I have some more?

(154,021 posts)offering a prayer for the animal that gave his or her life for you to eat is proper. I am talking well before the Age of Bronze here. So I guess your relatives are following pre-Christian mores.
That is what I call irony on steroids.
