Rare ice circle spotted on Sheyenne River
Leonard, ND (WDAY TV) - George Loegring of Casselton spotted this ice disk while hunting over the weekend.
This ice circle is entirely natural and quite rare. It formed over the weekend on the Sheyenne River about 10 miles Southwest of Leonard, ND.
It is the result of an eddy in the slowly-moving river. As the river began to freeze, the eddy froze as a perfect circle.
Ice circles are rare because they require just the right conditions: The river must be at the point of freezing, an eddy must be present and the current must be slow.

(2,529 posts)with my Army Reserve unit as part of our summer training in a military interservice exercise that was going on between the branches of service. It was in early August and I was never so cold in my life. We were bivouaced in the field and hadn't brought any cool or cold weather gear because we figured, hey, it was summer. The days were sunny and mellow, but we froze to death at night. The AF had to temporarily issue us field jackets and blankets and they laughed their asses off at us for being thin-blooded Southern wusses. Or as you say so correctly, the riffraff.
