The War on Thanksgiving - Pizza Hut Manager Fired for Refusing to Open

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/25/1258368/-Pizza-Hut-manager-fired-for-refusal-to-open-for-Thanksgiving-Day#

Tony Rohr says he doesn't think people should have to work on a holiday like Thanksgiving.
Rohr worked at Pizza Hut for more than ten years, but says he was fired recently because he refused to open on Thanksgiving.

Rohr started at Pizza Hut as a cook and worked his way up to being a general manager of the Jackson Boulevard Pizza Hut in Elkhart.

"Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two days that they're closed in the whole year and they're the only two days that those people are guaranteed to have off and spend it with their families," Rohr said.
His letter went on to say, "I hope you realize that it's the people at the bottom of the totem pole that make your life possible."

though not necessarily at Pizza Hut.

My son and I live a couple hours apart. He works at a convenience store. He'll get out of work mid-day, and I have volunteered to drive down to his area and take him out to dinner.

I'm having a hard time finding a restaurant.

I love that scene. It's right after the waiter lopped off the duck's head because the father said it was smiling at him.

I live in a resort area, and a number of very good hotel restaurants offer inexpensive nice buffets, or full traditional turkey dinners. These are businesses that have traditionally stayed open to accommodate travelers. I've done this a few times over the years and had a very nice time.

If you go for that kind of thing. I didn't realize how many people went out for T-day and Xmas until my wife got a job at a casino. The place was hopping on holidays.

I was in Georgia and away from my family. I had the whole restaurant to myself.

I was never an overly sentimental person, but that one thanksgiving kind of really sucked being alone and all.

Seeing your son and taking him out to even a crappy restaurant and making a silly adventure out of it will be a much better memory thank spending thanksgiving alone.

- the only reason I have it off is because I have every Thursday off. I guess the real question is should people who COULD and WANT to have a holiday be forced to work?

My nephew is thrilled to work on Thanksgiving. He works at Kohl's and is making basically 3 weeks' pay in one day. It should be a "do you want to work?" offering.

20. Something I've been noticing on Facebook

Nov 2013

For some weeks now, a lot of my Facebook friends have been posting about not shopping on Thanksgiving because people deserve the day to be with their families. Suddenly in the last day or so, I've seen a lot from the wingnut end of my friendship circle, basically telling everyone that it's their patriotic duty to shop on Thanksgiving. Arguments I've seen just today in favor of Thanksgiving shopping:

• Some people don't have families and want to work.
• Immigrants don't celebrate Thanksgiving and want to work (Which immigrants are these? All the immigrants I know, including my parents, celebrate Thanksgiving.)
• People need to work to earn money for Christmas presents (maybe if they were paid more in the first place?)
• Shopping on Thanksgiving stimulates the economy.
• People get bored staying home and would rather work.
• Shopping on Thanksgiving is a wholesome activity that promotes family togetherness.

The reasoning is bizarre.

Hotels, law enforcement, hospitals, fire departments, airports, nursing homes, prisons, stadium employees for the football games, etc, etc...

Does Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut need to be open, no. But it is simply not realistic for the entire nation to shut down for a day. Lots of people have to work.

Or have people working on the holidays?? People are traveling, watching football, and the parade...all of which requires people to be working...

I don't think a business is going to open if they dont think they will have customers.

.... DO NOT go shopping on Thanksgiving. DO NOT buy fast food on Thanksgiving. They only way these greedy bastards are going to stop this bullshit is when it is not profitable to open on Thanksgiving, and it won't be if no customers appear.
