I feel that Social Security could be around and substantive when I retire. So I just need to take a moment to reflect on why.
Some politicians and pundits will take any opportunity to call the program impractical, an entitlement, or whatever other words they use to disguise raiding it for themselves, directly or indirectly. But there are others who have banded together in recent months to protect the average American and have done so more openly and more loudly than we've seen in a generation. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and several more are part of an emerging New Left, comprised of social and economic liberals in this country. Elizabeth Warren put it correctly recently. To paraphrase--its not about numbers its about doing what's right.
What's right does not favor the few. It favors everyone. And I believe that these emerging voices must lead this country for us to survive as a first world nation. We need leaders who have the interests of all not just the interests of the few at heart and those who are equally willing to fight for what is right over what will profit the wealthy.
So here's to you all, and thank you for starting to restore my faith in this country and more importantly for looking out for us and doing what is right.
Anyone, I repeat, anyone, who votes Republican in the 2014 midterms needs to have their head examined. Thanks to all Congressmen/women who are standing up for those programs
that are so dear to everyone in this country, even teabaggers.

(5,279 posts)I really would like to be part of something seen by the international community as exceptional, not delusional. I am willing to do my part, I'll work hard and encourage others to do their best.
All of the things touted by us as examples of our "exceptionalism" share a common trait, these are times when we put aside personal gain and worked for the common good. I am glad there is a new confidence to the voices of the left.
"The common good"...I wonder if that is the difference between the philosophies; One side sees themselves as members of a society and is wants the entire society to prosper. The other view seems to be of rats trapped in a box, fighting for space and being forced to eat each other.
I do not wish to spend life with little pieces of rat caught between my teeth.

(50,983 posts)As you know, "they" are now engaged in a huge effort to dismantle the pension system.

(50,983 posts)I don't think the nay-sayers will give up on their goal to dismantle social security. We can look around and see it, or hear it, on every TV channel. It is the official national narrativewe must cut entitlements. They will not give up so easily.
