They have a plan. There's a bit heightened level of talk from the nuts about it. Cruz, Bachman, Gomert et al. They're setting it up.
We know they're crazy enough.

Should work real well towards Republicanising all those minority voters they need.

(39,343 posts)They've felt the backlash for their batshit craziness.
They are going to scream, bitch, and moan about how bad the ACA is and it's not going to work (Benghazi).

(11,619 posts)They have a rabid minority who will simultaneously cream their pants and salivate uncontrollably while declaring it is God's will that the Communist, Nazi, Socialist, Muslim Kenyan be removed from office.
What they don't have is the ability convict in the Senate.
Doing it in an election year is about as blatant as a bald assed political act as they can manage.
I don't think they will do it, just use the promise to get their constituents to the polls to get a Senate majority while suppressing the Democratic Party vote.

(22,336 posts)Whatever. My guess is it'll hurt them more than him. Especially if it's about Benghazi, because it'll be the chance to very publicly show that they're all conspiracy theorists. They'll come out of it looking stupid.

(637 posts)Say the republicans somehow manage to gain a senate majority, I highly doubt they will have 67 votes needed to convict. And like 96 they will pay the price heavily.
HeiressofBickworth
(2,682 posts)some kind of "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors" upon which to bring charges and, of course, secure conviction in the Senate.
A belief that Obama was born in Kenya or a belief that he is a Muslim, don't fall into any of those categories. Opposition to the ACA does not fall into any of the categories. After multiple hearings, Bengazi hasn't produced any criminal charges. Hatred of a Black President isn't sufficient either. A manic desire to reverse two presidential elections isn't sufficient either. They can't just say, we want to be the party in power so let's impeach the sitting President -- and it would have to be VP Biden, too, before the Boner could become president. The list could go on and on. So what charges will they bring in order to start impeachment proceedings?
Yes, the crazy runs strong in Tea Party circles.

We need to be mean and be prepared to enforce the law each time they break it. And they will break it. They have done it so often that they don't expect anyone to come after them.

(16,646 posts)Having a GOP majority in the Senate doesn't do it. They need 2/3 to convict, and they'll never get there. And that's presuming all of the GOP senators will vote to convict. Dubious. They didn't with Clinton.
The only way the House impeaches is if they do it like the last time, with a lame duck House after the 2014 elections and before the House ajourns in January 2015.
onenote
(42,778 posts)It spells out that a 2/3 majority in the Senate is needed to convict.
I'm pretty sure you can find a copy on the Internet.

(10,005 posts)impeachment by the House. They don't care if the senate even votes or not. The GOP just want to put an historic mark on his presidency.
Gman
(24,780 posts)What they're doing includes shutting down the government and everything else the nutcases in their safe gerrymandered districts want. It will be their undoing in November 2014 and could be what hands the House back to the Democrats. And that danger will ignite the intra-party warfare to white hot levels.

(11,175 posts)I predict they won't actually impeach Obama. They'll get enough negative reaction over any attack on Holder (Eric, not Jeffrey, BTW) that they'll decide to back off.
I hope I'm wrong, though. I agree with the other posters who say that more House craziness is good for us.

(27,985 posts)This is our way back into the house. Let them find something idiotic to impeach him for. Impeachment doesn't necessarily mean he has to leave office, but we will get the house back. Massively. This is better than a Government shutdown and almost as good as threatening until the last minute not to raise the debt ceiling. But, voters often have short attention spans. Do something like this in 2014 and it is a massive win for the Democrats. So, breathe deeply, and see the silver lining.

They need a REAL reason to do anything like that and Obama would never do anything that serious.

(250 posts)Everything the Rs do is to drum up outrage against Obama and the Democrats. Drumming up this outrage and paranoia is crucial for their direct mail/email scams to separate the rubes from their cash.
Once I realized that the Republican Party (and associated groups) has morphed into a gigantic money-raising entity, I interpret everything they do as an opportunity to raise more money. They are very effective; their scams do not require governing, legislating or telling the truth.
Shut Down the Government---Starve the Poor---Crash the Economy---Kill the ACA---Impeach Obama!

(11,447 posts)"Impeachment was off the table."? Oh! And these gems from Mr. Obama: "Now is not the time to point fingers." (just after the inauguration), "What Wall St. did was immoral, but not a crime." (Sixty Minutes). How much you want to bet that the President pardons Bush/Cheney before his term is out? If only we had some fight and spine in Washington.
