All I remember is something to the effect that Palin couldn't hold the Popes hat or something similar. Don't know why he's apologizing for that!

WHY are we apologizing to sarah palin? What on earth could Martin Bashir have said that demands an apology to sarah palin? Apology to Barack or Michelle Obama maybe. Apologize to Hillary Clinton maybe. They've been maligned and wronged repeatedly. But apologizing to sarah palin? WTF? What could he have possibly said that constitutes an offense to that bimbo?

Okay, I found the video of it. Allow me to quote something dick cheney said, that Martin Bashir's many critics evidently had no problem with:

"So?"

The worst part of that clip was the clip-within-a-clip of miss sarah herself and that whiny nasal screech of hers. OW!!! And sorry, but “resident dunce” and a “world class idiot" are not insults. They're biographical descriptions.

he played a clip of her speech equating ACA to slavery.

He then went on to quote from I guess a novel written by a slave / ex-slave about having been punished by having to shit in the mouth of a fellow slave.

Then there was another quote about peeing on someone.

I thought WHEW that's intense and it bothered me that he said this because it did seem to intense .. but he must have seen 12 Years a Slave - or something - and it moved him to lash out.

just like the media is comparing Katrina and the Iraq war to ACA .

i don't think he needs to apologize.

these people make these comparisons but they are also the ones to downplay how bad things like the war in iraq, katrina, slavery were.

16. Not from a novel

On Friday, Bashir wasn't quoting from a novel. This is an excerpt of what he said (courtesy Mediaite):

“One of the most comprehensive first-person accounts of slavery comes from the personal diary of a man called Thomas Thistlewood, who kept copious notes for 39 years. Thistlewood was the son of a tenant farmer, who arrived on the island of Jamaica in April 1750, and assumed the position of overseer at a major plantation.”

“What is most shocking about Thistlewood’s diary is not simply the fact that he assumes the right to own and possess other human beings, but is the sheer cruelty and brutality of his regime,” Bashir added. “In 1756, he records that a slave named Darby ‘catched eating kanes had him well flogged and pickled, then made Hector, another slave, s-h-i-t in his mouth.’”

“This became known as ‘Darby’s Dose,’ a punishment invented by Thistlewood that spoke only of inhumanity. And he mentions a similar incident in 1756, his time in relation to a man he refers to as Punch. ‘Flogged punch well, and then washed and rubbed salt pickle, lime juice and bird pepper, made Negro Joe piss in his eyes and mouth,’” Bashir recited.

Bashir said:

“I could go on, but you get the point,” Bashir said. “When Mrs. Palin invokes slavery, she doesn’t just prove her rank ignorance. She confirms if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, she would be the outstanding candidate.”

Martin Bashir is one of my favorites -- but what he said to and about Palin was way beyond the pale for TV. It's no wonder that today he sounded like he'd been soundly thrashed by his schoolmaster (sorry, his accent does that to me sometimes) and grateful to keep his job.

Sarah Palin is -- and we all agree on this -- a loathsome specimen of humanity. However, there is just no need to sink to her level to refute her. Perhaps the worst punishment to mete out to her is to simply refuse to speak her name at all on the air.

I wouldn't want to lose Martin because of her.

like something he would say. Anyway I just shook my head when I read it.. thinking, that won't end well.

He could have made his case so much better and gotten his point across. Just goes to show ya.. even good intelligent people make mistakes. Sometimes glaring.
