86. Last Night, three Examples
Mon Nov 18, 2013, 03:32 PM
Nov 2013

First they began talking about wealth disparities. I though, "Now we're talking." Then they delved into Billionaires giving away money, instead of living wage jobs, full-employment, raising the minimum wage, and stopping the outflow of jobs with tariffs and getting rid of free-trade, which I expected would follow. Free-market paradigm, don't actually use government to "solve" the problems--no, let the rich spend the money on what they want to address.

Second, life at Gitmo, a totally right-wing presentation, no one was actually talked to that was in prison, no expression was put on about how they feel being locked up in "limbo" without a trial, perhaps for no other reason than some asshole "friend" of theirs wanted the handout of money Americans were spreading around over there.

Then there was the dump-workers, trash picker recyclers in South America (Cateura, Paraguay) spinning gold out of actual trash--a better literal rags to riches story couldn't be sold--it was Horatio Alger, Capitalism supporting above all others--but this guy was molding, assembling, cobbling together trash, into musical instruments. I have to give it to the guy, he was amazing. It was an inspirational story--nothing wrong with that. Again though, it might have been better were it about how we allow this incredible poverty to exist in third worlds, or how our trade agreements essentially, while sold as beneficial to them here, actually simply uses these folks as wage slaves. We're not lifting them, or ourselves up, but tearing both of us down to their levels.

From what I see, all are right-wing perspectives, when it would've been much more beneficial to address it from a liberal stance.

Subject: Why haven't you fired Lara Logan and her producer - for crapping all over your credibility?
(Even if they send this straight to their trash bin, they'll know what it's about without even opening it.)

Dear folks -

I'm a retired journalist, and if I was a known partisan who had misconstrued a report because of a personal agenda I had, to weaken the standing of a sitting President and a recently retired Secretary of State (who might be a future Presidential candidate) - and who took a YEAR working on a "story" and didn't realize she was being used by an agenda-driven lie-spinner, and whose work was used to buttress the products and profit margin of an affiliated company (a CLEAR case of conflict-of-interest), I would be fired by now. WHY is Lara Logan still employed? Because she photographs well or looks good wearing a low-cut top that shows off her cleavage? ON "60 MINUTES"?????????????

You're certainly capable of such quick and decisive remedial moves. After all, you certainly got rid of Dan Rather and Mary Mapes in a hurry - even though their story was based on truths. Lara Logan is a proven war-hawk with an agenda. If nothing else, she's a lazy reporter with slipshod tactics who didn't check her sources but just stovepiped one of 'em on the air because what he said was damaging to the White House. So what does that make YOU, now?

You HAVE to let her go, AND her producer as well. You HAVE to send a message. Otherwise, you'll be as guilty of crapping on the previously-sterling "60 Minutes" brand. CBS News was once the home of "the most trusted man in America" (Walter Cronkite - in case some of you forgot or are too young to remember). "60 Minutes" was uber-reputable, its credibility beyond any question or doubt - before your little Goldilocks was even BORN! I am old enough to remember back that far. It's a tragedy, and nearly a crime, to see this FORMERLY highly-respected program decline so badly. Who'll feel like trusting it anymore? Certainly not me. You've lost me as a viewer, as well as a retired journalist who now feels rather personally insulted.

No wonder people don't trust most TV news anymore...

I just watched tonight's segment, titled "The Giving Ploedge: A new club for billionairs," featuring Charlie Rose interviewing Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates. It was a paean to philanthropy and the 'virtuous' billionairs among us. I have nothing against philanthropy, but I threw up in my mouth just a little when one person in the segment, one Randall Lane, made this statement: "Government is showing, you know, over the past couple decades that it can no longer solve the great problems of the day. Now these philanthropists who have incredible wealth, the problem-solving brainpower, and also the name and the influence to be able to open doors are uniquely qualified right now to solve the huge problems."

If the networks want to know why they are becoming a joke, they should see what they have done with their journalism. If even an old standard like 60 Minutes falls prey to tomfoolery and pandering, why the hell should we care about them?

I used to joke that the only news shows in prime time worth watching were on Comedy Central..now, I wish that WAS a joke. When the stuff of bad jokes becomes a reality, that is when you know you have wondered into the twilight Zone.
