the officer pays dues and his union has a benefit program/fund to help members if they are not working for any reason. my wife`s union has the same program. she and the other union officials vote on who is entitled to funds. as with the rules of my wife`s union those payments are used to make sure the family of the officer has money to eat or pay bills.
