Evangelical Pat Robertson: Legalize pot

Evangelical preacher Pat Robertson stepped forward yesterday as one of the least likely new advocates of legalizing marijuana.

When an older person you wouldn’t expect to advocate legalizing pot comes out in support, there’s usually some philosophical underpinning to make sense of their position. Ron Paul doesn’t seem like a weed fan, however his strict Libertarian worldview mean that he has to be for legal pot or he’d be a hypocrite.

Pat Robertson may be making the most sense, however, in arguing that it’s just not that big a deal. “I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,” He said. “If people can go into a liquor store and buy a bottle of alcohol and drink it at home legally, then why do we say that the use of this other substance is somehow criminal?”

The legal system fucks up a lot of people's lives and when those people have kids, the grandparents often need to step in to provide for them. Grandparents who need to provide for children whose parents can't get a good job because they have a criminal record are not as able to donate to Pat as they would be otherwise.
