to the "I'm a male/female ... why do I have to pay for maternity/prostate care" objection.
"How many channels does your TV have? ... how many do you watch?"

(153,193 posts)plenty of people are dumping cable because of the lack of a la carte channel selection

(31,849 posts)those dumping cable for lack of al la carte selection are sacrificing what they want (the NFL Channel) because they also have to pay for what they don't want (the NUTV, informercials 24/7).
Also, what those people don't seem to understand (as with insurance) ... it is NUTV (paying to air) that makes the NFL Channel affordable - it is me, a male, paying a small amount for gyno services that I will never use that makes my prostate services affordable.

(64,933 posts)ALL MEDICAL CARE SHOULD BE COVERED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)but do you really believe that someone making this argument will agree that all medical care should be covered?
Sometimes, we must bring people along in the argument by addressing their specific argument.

(34,087 posts)I want access to the network channels, since digital doesn't reach far enough for us to access them over the air. Because all the satellite/cable/etc. packages include well more than what I want (with a price ticket to match), I choose not to purchase any of them. With the ACA, I don't have that option - at least not without paying a fine.
A better analogy would be to insurance itself. Insurance pays for all sorts of things that either will not or cannot happen to me - but I can't pick and choose what is covered. For example, I had my appendix out 24 years ago - I only have one, so it won't happen again. I can't buy an insurance package which excludes appendectomies (or any other care related to the organ I no longer have). There are certain medications I can't take - unopposed estrogen, and penicillin for two (increased risk of thrombosis & cancer because of personal health status with the former and an allergy with the latter). I can't buy a package which excludes medications I will not or cannot take.

(31,849 posts)is far from perfect; but honestly ... it is simplistic and sensible enough to use on folks making that argument to STFU ... at least until they think it through.
And for those quick enough to make the cable/a la cart argument, the follow up is the same as in the cable/a la cart argument ... it is the packaging of channels that make the most desirable channels affordable. (whether that is true or not, is immaterial because that is/has been the winning cable/a la cart answer)
Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)if I don't want to pay for channels I don't want. That is why the analogy is not a good one - health insurance is mandatory (unless you want to pay a tax penalty.
It isn't the a la cart portion which makes it fail, it is that I can just walk away from cable if I don't like the way they package the product.
And - as for shutting them up while they think through it - no if they have half a brain in their head. The problem in the argument struck me immediately when I read your post. The only piece which took any time in responding was that I didn't want to just say "Bad argument" without trying to provide one which works better, and the people you are trying to reach won't have bother doing that.

Medicare for all, nationalize the insurance industry.

(31,849 posts)Nope ... I never worked in that industry; but I did understand "loss-leader" packaging. In my work, in higher education, I education I see it everyday ... the money generated through STEM studies, funds Humanities.

I also have no children, yet I pay taxes for schools. That is because educated children are a benefit to all of society. And good pre-natal care and proper medical attention during the birth process create healthier children which also benefits all of society.
