RNC On Feb. Job Growth: 'The Situation Is Clearly Not Improving'

RNC On Feb. Job Growth: 'The Situation Is Clearly Not Improving'

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement on the February jobs numbers.

"Today's jobs report is yet another reminder that far too many Americans are out of work, and the situation is clearly not improving. Millions of families continue to feel the pain of the sluggish Obama economy and the rising cost of gas, groceries, and healthcare. They are still waiting on President Obama to keep his promise of an economic recovery," said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

The U.S. economy added 227,000 new jobs last month. Unemployment remained unchanged at 8.3 percent.

I realize that the GOP has made a strategy out of lying, but there are situations in which it won't work. One of the biggest is when people have their own, direct, access to information. The Bush administration got away with lying about Iraq, both before and after it started. But ultimately, too many people knew "Johnny" down the street, or at their church, that came back with stories that didn't sound so much like we were "winning". Furthermore, they could see what happened to Johnny, a missing leg, a permanent injury, or even PTSD, and that was very real to them. Stories of how "things were improving" in Iraq weren't real.

The GOP can try the whole "clearly things aren't getting better" but the problem is, everybody has their own connection to the economy. And that connnection can be very real. It can be the guy that watches his 401K closely, and has noticed that he's recovered much of what he's lost. It can be the guy that was out of a job, and now has one, albeit at half the salary of his old one. It can be the small business owner that is seeing his sales increase, almost to where they were 3 years ago. It can be the waitress that is getting more tips, bigger tips, or got that better shift because business was up.

No, things aren't great and they are fragile as all get out. But people know, through their own direct experience, that things are better than they were 2 years ago. And all the lying from some talking heads won't change that. Worse, for the GOP, people who vote their pocketbooks can be VERY conservative in their voting. i.e. they WON'T want to make any big changes while things are getting better. They'll tend to stick with the plan and not go looking for new leadership.
