The Big Dick agrees with the Big Dog

By JOSE DELREAL | 11/13/13 6:16 AM EST
Dick Cheney had a rare moment of agreement with Bill Clinton: They both think President Barack Obama needs to step in to prevent consumers’ health care plans from being canceled.

“I’m inclined to agree with Bill Clinton. That’s something that ought to be attempted,” Cheney told Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday. ”But given the complexity of the system, you’ve already got people now who have lost their policies, who can’t get new ones. I’m not quite sure how now you go peel back that onion.”

Cheney was commenting on Clinton’s remarks in an interview that Obama needs to honor the federal government’s commitment that no one would be forced to give up their health care plan. The former president said Obama should seek a legislative change to prevent the plans from being taken away if that’s the only way to handle the problem.
Cheney also noted that while fixing the problems caused by the Affordable Care Act is important, he’s not sure how that could be accomplished.

The cancellations are BY THE CHOICE OF THE INSURANCE COMPANIES, not the result of the ACA in most cases. For better or worse, we chose a free market system. In the free market system, you can't force companies to be in a business they don't want to be in.

Moreover it is probably too late to make any changes like this. However, if we could get the right kind of legislation passed, it would actually be a good thing. Let's say that there was a 12-month extension on the grandfathering of policies. That would allow millions of currently insured people to have some coverage. Although a lot of that is junk insurance, most people would not be hurt over the next 12 months. And this would allow the priority to be on those who don't have any insurance today.

And if that same law said that all the notices from these insurance companies had to clearly disclose the deficiencies of these policies, and clear explain how people can go to the exchange to look for policies that are not deficient, then this could be a good move. Getting something like that passed in a couple of weeks isn't very likely.

But Boehner thinks he's going to write a bill that says insurance companies have to keep offering the old policies, I bet he's going to get an earful from a lot of insurance CEOs who have already moved on and have no interested in going back. After all, the subsidized exchange allows them to sell policies that are a lot more expensive, with the government picking up most of the tab.

There are some plans that are really good plans that are getting cancelled (like mine) and replaced with significantly worse/more expensive alternatives. The question is: where to draw the line between a good plan and a bad one?

That woman in Florida clearly had a shitty plan...

Or how about this:

SINGLE PAYER NOW, PLEASE?

c'mon Bill. You can do better. As Big Ed pointed out, if Hillary were to run, she would need for the ACA to be a success.
So don't sabotage it Bill.
