In a move that could complicate the Democratic Partys efforts to hold the Senate, Dem Rep. Chellie Pingree a favorite of national liberals and progressives has decided not to run for the seat of retiring Olympia Snowe, a Democrat familiar with her thinking tells me.
The decision will disappoint national liberal groups who had mounted a campaign to draft her for the race. Pingree is seen by liberals as an unabashed defender of progressive principles she has been an aggressive advocate for the public option and for marriage equality, and has crusaded against corporate money in politics. Installing her in Snowes seat would have been a major coup for the left, which is perpetually looking for progressive voices to counterbalance moderate Dems that are often too politically skittish to embrace the liberal/Dem agenda.
But Pingree, after looking closely at her chances, determined that entering the race could pose too great a risk to Dem chances of holding the Senate, the Democrat familiar with her thinking tells me. Pingree did see a path to winning, and passing on the race cut against her competitive nature. But the entry of independent former governor Angus King would have meant theyd compete for many of the same voters, making a Republican victory more likely a risk she was not prepared to take, the Democrat says.

Chellie drops out because Angus King dropped in on as an independent, and says he will caucus with Dems. She steps down, so she won't split votes with Angus, and women lose out increasing their percentage in Congress. This sucks, and to top it all off another woman who would have run for Chellie's seat, won't run either.

(129,139 posts)He put up a quote from an article about how the Dems would most likely go with a strategy of supporting the Independent rather than put up a "weak" Dem and end up splitting the liberal and moderate votes. I think his comment was that they still weren't sure which way the independent would caucus.

(10,237 posts)Take it from me, we are still smarting from 2010 when Libby Mitchell (the Dem who would've been a great Governor) and Elliot Cutler (a rich independent who had enough money to buy himself a 2nd place finish after Libby ran out of money) split 56% of the vote and gave us our teabagger Florida resident moron of a governor in paul lepage.
I can see Mike Michaud not running because as a 6th termer in a quite attainable Dem majority, he'd have more influence than a freshman Senator. He'd also be a very strong candidate for Governor against a very likely very defeatable paul lepage. i have no direct evidence of this, but I always had a feeling that he was interested in the Blaine House.
Chellie Pingree may now have her eyes set on susan collins in 2014. She may have a much better shot than when she ran against her in 2002.
I would only say this in "the family" of a Democratic website, but I'm not particularly interested in a John Balducci candidacy. He wasn't a bad Governor but he wasn't that good either.
We DO NOT want to take a chance on another lepage-like bagger going to the senate to represent this state. YUCK!
That was just my 2 cents, and quite possibly overpriced at that!
PEACE!
