His book came out several years ago denouncing trans-fats, hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated fats as bad for your heart, and also recommended the limited use of carbohydrates.
When he slipped on ice and died from the injury I think most folks took it to be caused by his diet regimen and thought it was a heart attack. His survivors said it wasn't, but..
So now the government wants to remove all these substances from the grocery shelves, and I'm glad.
Many years ago, Crisco made shortening made from coconut or palm oil and everything was so good. Since they changed it, nothing fried or baked has been as good. Coconut-Palm oil are good fats, along with butter and olive oil, more calories, but healthier and ever so much more delicious (and expensive). I notice that your best chocolates have coconut-palm oil as an ingredient...
I think the nonsense started many years ago when some idiot decided that McDonald's fries cooked in coconut-palm oil said they were too fattening and started a fuss about it. They and other manufacturers replaced the fattening shortening with lower calorie hydrogenated vegetable fats, which were really harmful, as Atkins said...
I won't complain. I remember when everything was delicious and used either coconut, palm, butter or olive oil to cook or bake.

Palm Oil is too expensive for Little Debbies....
It used to be what McDonald's fried their fries in, I think.

Went through a phase where I could not afford processed food, and now just reading the labels makes me queasy.
I remember buying popcorn with the little bag of coconut oil attached, you squeezed it out into the pot.
Best way to make popcorn, use your own oil and use a big pot.
And then some real melted butter - put it all in a paper grocery bag and shook it to distribute.
As usual, the crap they put into processed food is all about who makes money on it or gets subsidies from it.

(10,044 posts)Even if it was good for you, I can't stand the smell of microwave popcorn.
Lotsa companies might switch to the product you used to buy, corn with a pouch, or the alternative, go out of business
But who is going to teach the young how to wash pots? Lost art. They should have a college course in washing dishes and picking up what falls on the floor...

(10,044 posts)but I didn't know how. Every time I typed coconut-palm oil I knew I was doing something wrong, but decided to figure it out later. Your OP title haunted me
How is coconut oil different from palm oil?
Coconut and palm oil come from different kinds of palm trees. Coconut oil and palm oil are very closely related. Coconut oil comes from the coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera) while Palm oil comes from the oil palm tree (elaeis guineensis).

There's something your body stops producing when you take statins for a long time, but to correct that problem, there's a very expensive supplement you should take. But if you don't want to take either, one doctor said to take Red Yeast. The other doctor says "no." Says it'll ruin your kidneys.
When I was on Atkins several years ago, no problem with my cholesterol. Went back to the bad fats, and I have the problem now.
I'll try the book at the library first, then Amazon..
Thanks

(27,985 posts)My doc tried pushing on me since I was 37 (41 now) and only have slightly elevated numbers.
I fought him for years and tried this summer and had TERRIBLE muscle pains after only a few days so I stopped. My numbers fluctuate with my weight. The key for me is exercise, exercise, exercise.
Good luck!

(13,409 posts)I've tried a few others and they all make me feel like crap. Always hungry, always feeling deprived. Then of course being off the diet usually makes me feel awful, even when I do my best to ration everything (which, I suppose, is a diet). But being on Atkins, not only do I lose weight, but I actually feel good. Yes, it can be tough having food around at all times that I actually want to eat (breakfast is especially tough for me on Atkins), but I always feel so much better when I'm on it.
He was a man ahead of his time and I'm very thankful to be able to follow his advice.

(13,409 posts)I have zero issues with lunch or dinner, I can always have a spinach salad with some meat and cheese if I can't find anything else. Breakfast is always my tough meal on Atkins. I'm accustomed to having breakfast sandwiches or cereal, both of which I've yet to find a good replacement for on Atkins. Often times I just end up skipping breakfast because I have a hard time eating eggs without some kind of bread. I'll figure it out eventually.

(41,984 posts)The weight loss is slow and steady but what impresses me is the near disappearance of inflammation. I'm basically healthy but overweight, and had thought the knees and hands were due to age and weight. Nope. The pain is nearly gone. So is the lifelong heartburn.
Mind you, I ate almost entirely whole grains, few processed foods, and except for indulgences, not many sweets. I ate healthy fats and still do. But now I eat virtually no cRbs except those in fruits and vegetables, and more healthy proteins than I did. The improvement is marked. I've also lost my taste for them. It's very interesting.

(3,033 posts)Lost over 150 lbs. and reversed diabetes, high blood pressure, and my cholesterol went from well over 400 to 211. Fibromyalgia went away (I think that was a side effect of a statin), my back pain went away, etc., etc., etc. I'm no longer on any kind of meds at all, except fish oil and magnesium. Atkins was right and my doctor can bite me. The low fat, high carb diet is what put the 150 lbs. on me to begin with.

(10,044 posts)I had my Atkins book on the shelf for maybe 10 or more years, and in August, sold it at a garage sale to get the house cleared of unused items.
Hope whoever bought it is using it now that the news is out...no trans fats or hydrogenated shortening. I did somebody a favor

(3,033 posts)I'd like to add that my only exercise during the entire time on Atkins was a 30 min. power walk daily with my dogs. Just enough to get my heart going and my joints lubed.
I gave my Atkins book to my niece who needs to read it, but she's still in denial. The day will come when her poor health due to poor diet will smack her in the face like it did to me.
It's simple - cut the carbs, eat plenty of good fats and nuts with some fruit and veggies, and your brain will burn fat for energy instead of carbs. And the cravings will die a quick death.
I was on a statin for nearly 10 years and completely lost most of my vocabulary due to my brain's lack of cholesterol. Thankfully, my memory has returned.

(29,503 posts)trans fats. There will still be industries out there which will seek to confuse the science behind this, and mislead consumers.
My last doctor visit was so encouraging. All my readings are terrific, and actually getting better, and I attribute it - in part - to my low-carb, high fat diet.
Obviously, people have to decide for themselves what to eat, and I still occasionally hit McDonald's for lunch. So sue me, lol.
