My eye doctor goes to Africa each year (representing Doctors without Borders) to do cataract surgeries.

One reputable charity with strong "watchdog" support is direct relief.org …. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage to see their awards and recognition section.

That's one of my biggest problems with large charities. Yes, I want to help in major disasters. But the rest of the year, I contribute widely to other specific causes, and don't want to field constant requests for more donations from yet another organization.

My only problem with Doctors Without Borders is this. I probably donated via the Internet initially, several years ago. So obviously I know about them; I'd have to be a hermit to not know about the current disaster; and the internet hasn't been shut down, last I checked. Why do they keep sending me mail? (Ok maybe there is a place to opt out and I missed it. Still. Come on.) Otherwise I think they are a great org and I will probably donate again. Through the internet, not by responding to their mail, which has slowed down but still comes too often.

…..but I have clothes on my back, food on the table, and a roof over my head. Helping families survive such an unspeakable tragedy far outweighs the inconvenience of unwanted email. (It is a choice.)

It is a choice.

I still donate. But the waste annoys the hell out of me and I'd be happy to find an org that doesn't do that.

AsahinaKimi told me about it after the 2011 Tsunami in Japan. I've given to them for several disasters and did so again last night for the Philippines
