(11,709 posts)One can, and often should, disagree vociferously with the decisions that come out of the White House but the Office of the Presidency should always be afforded the respect of a free people.
The two concepts are not in conflict; each compliments the other.

(24,324 posts)And yet, to tell the truth I would never have shown any respect for Bush because he disrespected the office.
Or Reagan.
Piss on them.
last1standing
(11,709 posts)I'm not saying he wasn't respecting him as a person; I wasn't there and I don't know what the man was thinking. However, he didn't say "No sir, you're a great man," he said "No sir, you are the president." At least his words connote a respect for the office that isn't bound by the person inhabiting it.
I'm with you in disrespecting reagan and bush. I despise them and the suffering they have inflicted on millions, if not billions, of human beings. I despise them for shredding the rights and responsibilities of the Constitution that were hard won by the People in debate, wars and courts. I despise them for reframing the argument away from what we can do as a society for the betterment of us all to what each of us can grasp for ourselves.
Yet with all that said, I hope that old man would have stood for both of them in respect for the office and for what that office is supposed to represent. I can only hope that I would have done the same.
pangaia
(24,324 posts)I can only add, you are a better man/woman than I.

(5,995 posts)Still have it, it is mine from the President, even though the name attached to it make me ill. The office is much greater than any man who inhabits it, but wish we were always blessed with ones to equal the current one.
cynatnite
(31,011 posts)I don't think we lose anything with that. In fact, it keeps the integrity of the office strong, IMO. That above all is what's important.

(11,709 posts)If this country has so obviously failed its people that the highest office is no longer worthy of respect, then it is time to "refresh the tree of liberty... with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
I know things are bad, but I don't believe we have quite reached that point.

First by some no name Republican Congressman and then by a Supreme Court Justice Alito And Republicans APPLAUDED their actions.. It was more too of showing their bigotry...With very little news coverage on that very dark moment in our history.

(27,275 posts)as dogcatcher, let alone president. he is a vile, unlikeable buffoon and a liar. some call him a malignant sociopath. scotus disrespected the office, the law, and the american people by installing him in the white house. he never deserved or earned respect...probably not a single day is his entire miserable life. that he was allowed to occupy the white house was the harbinger of just how doomed we were going to be during his reign. don't even get me started about ronald reagan. we will be doomed if we allow another judicial coup to stand as an election.
last1standing
(11,709 posts)That's seriously the extent of his good acts during his time in office, so no, he never earned our respect. In fact, he earned our disgust. The office of the presidency is a different matter.
noiretextatique
(27,275 posts)as i mentioned, scotus disrespected the office and the american public. the "office" doesn't inherently "deserve" anything.
last1standing
(11,709 posts)I agree that bush, and SCOTUS, have disrespected their offices. And while I still respect the offices themselves, I respect your right to express your lack of respect even moreso.
If we didn't have the ability to disagree on this subject, the offices in question surely not be worthy of respect.

This is patriotism, in my opinion, not that ginned up crap that they spew on Fox.
At a 'town hall' meeting at our school, I heard Senator Feingold gently rebuke someone who was making a critical remark about President Bush (I am sorry I don't recall the criticism, but it must have been delivered in such a way that Russ did not like it). Senator Feingold said, "we always show respect for the office, even if we don't agree with the person in it".
Damn, I miss Russ.
