Family Research Council President Tony Perkins on Monday argued that companies should have the religious freedom to deny contraception coverage for women because thats why the Pilgrims came here.
Earlier this month, a the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit became the latest to rule on a mandate in President Barack Obamas health care reform law that requires all health insurance plans to provide birth control without a co-pay.
The court ruled that company owners Francis A. Gilardi Jr. and Philip M. Gilardi should not have to provide coverage if it was against their Catholic faith.
There have been more than 40 challenges to the mandate across the country so far, and the Supreme Court was expected to rule on one case before the end of the month.
Perkins told the hosts of Fox & Friends that he expected the high court to pick up even more of those cases.

Brothers Francis A. Gilardi and Philip M. Gilardi own and operate Freshway Foods and Freshway Logistics in Sidney. The brothers employ nearly 400 people. They filed suit against the government earlier this year."

(46,335 posts)Something Perkins and his cronies want to do also.
They had religious freedom in Holland, after first leaving England.
But there was TOO MUCH (for them) religious freedom in Holland, and the Pilgrims were losing people to other faiths.
So they emigrated to North America so they could control absolutely their peoples' faith.
Dissenters were jailed, executed or exiled.
Perkins is still using the 3rd-grade textbook he was given from a Christian school during the 1960's.

Maybe the half returning from Holland had that as 1 of their goals. But the other half recruited from England were likely in it just for the chance to own land.

(8,964 posts)Oh yeah, none of their names appear as signatories to the Declaration of Independence or U.S. Constitution did they? Not that it would matter, since the 1st Amendment guarantees citizens some choices, including freedom of and FROM religion. Back in the day, someone had you in mind, Mr. Perkins!

(15,805 posts)of why so many people are fleeing our churches.
Of course, if those churches really practiced what their nominal founder taught, there'd be no money in it . . .
In truth, there are congregations that do practice the real faith fundamentals every day; and none of that practice involves "shoulding" on everyone else. Tony Perkins and his ilk have no use for such people as they simply cannot be exploited for profit.

(27,670 posts)With increasing frequency, we are seeing individuals and institutions claiming a right to discriminate by refusing to provide services to women and LGBT people based on religious objections. The discrimination takes many forms, including:
Religiously affiliated schools firing women because they became pregnant while not married;
Business owners refusing to provide insurance coverage for contraception for their employees;
Graduate students, training to be social workers, refusing to counsel gay people;
Pharmacies turning away women seeking to fill birth control prescriptions;
Bridal salons, photo studios, and reception halls closing their doors to same-sex couples planning their weddings.
While the situations may differ, one thing remains the same: religion is being used as an excuse to discriminate against and harm others.
Instances of institutions and individuals claiming a right to discriminate in the name of religion arent new. In the 1960s, we saw institutions object to laws requiring integration in restaurants because of sincerely held beliefs that God wanted the races to be separate. We saw religiously affiliated universities refuse to admit students who engaged in interracial dating. In those cases, we recognized that requiring integration was not about violating religious liberty; it was about ensuring fairness. It is no different today.

(35,015 posts)It's like this:
The pilgrims came here fleeing persecution because they didn't want to follow religion-based laws.
Denying birth control persecutes women for not subscribing to the crazy-ass religious belief that sex is only to make babies.
What about those two things is the same?????
