(3,033 posts)In Toledo, Ohio, D. Michael Collins, an Independent, beat incumbent Independent Mike Bell. The Dems didn't have a horse in the race because the vote was split in the primary, allowing Collins to win.
Collins had an easy victory over Bell, who sold our waterfront to the Chinese, raised our water, sewer and garbage rates, while hanging out and supporting Kasich, traveling the globe and buying very expensive city vehicles for his and others' use, while we drive on crumbling streets and suffer rampant drug/gang violence, urban flight and lack of jobs.
Without a Dem in the race, local unions supported Collins. The local Dem party had a new leader this year, and he blew it by ignoring 2 Dems running in the primary that split the vote. His name is Ron Rothenbuler, former Carpenter's union leader for many years. He should have at least attempted to talk one of them out of running this time. I don't know how it works, but he should be fired.
Here's a snip from our local rag confirming that Collins in an Independent:
"Mayoral candidate D. Michael Collins, a political independent who edged out two Democrats to face incumbent Mike Bell at the polls in November, was endorsed today by the United Automobile Workers."

Christie's win, when analyzed, is not insignificant and the Dem abandonment of Buono was not a good thing.
Overall, last night was a good night for democrats. It was not a wipeout for republicans.
It's dangerous, in this political environment, to become lulled into a sense of false security, thinking that repubs and the tea party are done.
We have a lot of work ahead of us.
