"owning" the word will give cover to more use of the word with the excuse "they use it". Think about the "n" word and the justification that it is okay to use it because rappers do.

I do not want to "own" that word.

It still rankles the hell out of me to have (usually younger) women tell me that the "c" word is just fine and dandy, because THEY have "reclaimed" it.

That said, I can kind of see why this seems a bit different for many and why the bumper sticker might appeal... On balance, though I still really don't like it.

I wouldn't put that bumper sticker on my car. I've run into too many Limbaugh-like people, and there's no way I want to give them any reason to tap into their hate. They're all too eager to unleash their venom without my help.

20. I'm going to have trouble expressing my thoughts in writing; so bear with me.

I don't think that it's demeaning for a woman to have a lot of sex or enjoy having sex or vice versa. Taken in context, women can use the term slut in a non-offensive way, usually amongst friends. Now that I think of it, I've only heard it used as compliment amongst close female friends or gay men. And if one can wall herself off from right-wingnuts, then it's entirely possible to never hear slut used as a slanderous term.

Then there's Limbaugh. It's hard to deny that the context that he uses the term, the tone of voice, the back drop of "traditional family values", coupled with his other remarks about prostitution, all convey that his intentions, when using the term, are to bully, harass, and demean.

These are my experiences and thoughts.

I've just never thought of calling a friend a slut....to me it means much more than just a woman who has a lot of sex and enjoys it. It carries the connotation, to me, that someone is available to most anyone and demonstrates no discrimination in who they have sex with. I like sex a lot, and have friends who are single and have sex when not in a committed relationship, but we are all discriminating in our choices of sex partners. It's not just about getting serviced....to me a slut is someone who only cares about being serviced with no regard for the other person. Maybe I'm reading too much into the word but that's just how I see it.

but I don't give much time to judging someone who is indiscriminate about his or her partners. I'm not insinuating that you do, as you never said that.

I could be reading too much into your response, but your definition of a slut as someone who cares about being serviced with no regard for the other person seems to be similar to someone I would label as a player. Players are disingenuous, and are to be avoided.
