My RW Mom just told me Michelle Obama wants to take away all the kid's Halloween candy...

"Gotta go Mom. Happy Halloween. Love you, Bye."
Click.
I am the master of "this conversation is now over." when she drags it into Crazyland.

RW radio and Fox News has completely ruined her.
She used to be a guitar playing, Pete Seeger folk song singing, union-organizing, elementary school teacher for 35 years but after retirement turned to the radio and Fox which was getting going just as she retired.
Sigh.
I love her but thank God she lives 3000 miles away on the east coast.

They'd send the military into everyone's homes to take away candy?

Guess I should just slip the kids a "note" from Michelle and eat the candy myself.

there was a neighbor boy whose mother didn't let him eat candy at all. I let my own kids have candy on a limited basis, and certainly let them have it at Halloween. It was never a big deal to them, and none were overweight. The neighbor's boy was obsessed with it because he was denied it totally. He would sneak candy. When he got older and mowed lawns or shoveled snow, he bought candy with all his money and would hide it from his mother.

Tell me which is better? Limit it but not make it a big deal for your children, or totally deny it and make your children become obsessed with it?

13. From ABC News:

Oct 2013

[div class='excerpt"]Later today, the president and first lady will welcome school kids and military families to trick-or-treat at the White House, which will be lit orange for the annual occasion. The Obamas will dole out treats, including White House M&Ms, jelly beans, cookies and dried fruit (which may be more trick than treat).

The First Dogs are also getting in on the fun. A giant topiary of “Sunny” made of ribbon is dressed as a sunflower and a huge “Bo” made of pipecleaners is wearing a pirate costume.

In any event, the first family is known for handing out treats on Halloween. I think the items of choice are cookies and M&Ms in White House packages.

How does a guitar playing, Pete Seeger folk song singing, union-organizing, elementary school teacher for 35 years go from that to a right wing radio and fox news listener/viewer?

I've never had more than a minute of exposure to either, by choice.

Even if I exposed myself to that crap, it wouldn't have turn me into a rw nutjob, especially after 35 yrs of being a liberal.

I mean no disrespect toward you mom.

heck she was one of the 12& who still supported dubya right up until the end.
She historically tends to be more of a WF Buckley type (gets it from my late grandfather, her dad) but sometimes the crap that comes out of her mouth surprises the hell out of me.

Buckley worked to marginalized the Birchers because in the political environment of the time they were an embarrassment outside of their own bubble, especially their open antisemitism. He wanted to pry conservative Jews away from the Democrats, and there would be no hope of that if his movement had anything to do with the Birchers, especially when the Holocaust was a very recent memory.

Shift to the '90s: Movement conservatives weren't sidelining the crazies, they were embracing them as a tool to advance their agendas. No prominent conservative made it their business to push back. Someone might occasionally cluck their tongue, but none of them worked to restrain Newt, Rush, and the rest. That includes Buckley himself in his final years.

there was a thread here at DU a few weeks ago along a similar line-parent retires, starts listening to more hate radio and fox, turns into a lunatic. The first step is getting them to change the channel.
