Including the Tennessee cities of Brentwood and Franklin. There are country music stars with huge mansions, health care executives who have horse farms for fun, wealthy attorneys who start their own vineyards as a hobby. I work in Franklin but I don't live there. The price of property around there is out of the question.

Oct 2013

which our average home sale price is $780K. Based on the cost of living Brentwood was the wealthiest city in the U.S in 2010 (just going off memory, I could be wrong on the year). I think our average family income here on Brentwood is 170K a year....we have 30k residents and around 11K households.

One thing about our home prices is that you get more "house" here vs anywhere as we have really low taxes. My home is appraised for right at $420K and is around 3900 sq ft, it is propably one of the "smallest" in Brentwood. I only pay $1600 a year in property taxes. Take this home and put it in other towns and I'd probably being paying $5K a year in property taxes. So the difference in taxes being lower lets most get into a bigger home.

Nashville area suburbs can be describes as this:

Brentwood - New Money and younger drive Lexus Suv's
Franklin - just as much money as Brentwood but "rednecks" and drive pick up trucks all decked out
Belle Mead - Drive Jaguars and have real "old money" in the family - Trust fund kids.

TO summarize Brentwood and Franklin I'd call them the healthcare capital of the world, out of the top 10 healthcare companies in the U.S I'd say the top 6 are located in Brentwood and Franklin (Coolsprings area) along with all the suppliers to the industry. That is why I am here, my wife is a director over 18 hospitals, the company she works for owns around 200 hospitals.

I lived in the DC area most of my life and am accustomed to costly real estate, but never thought taxes too onerous. A stint in Jersey was the eye-opener as to insane property taxes. The area I'm in now has low property taxes, and it's amazing what you can buy for a *mere* $250K.

Kudos to your wife -- she sounds quite accomplished. And if I decide to pursue this lead, I'll be in touch.

Feel free to contact me concerning this area. We are transplants from Ohio. Been here a few years though.

I simply came home from work one day in Ohio and the wife said "I have this great offer that I was approached about in Brentwood Tn....they will even buy our house here in Ohio and move us, fly us to Nashville 4 times to look for a house and cover all of our closing costs on a house there in Nashville"....I said "Where do I sign". 25 days later we were living in Brentwood. We simply watched them pack all of our stuff up in Ohio, (we packed over-night bags) jumped in our 2 vehicles and headed for Tn. They put us in an executive home for 3 days while they unpacked and set us up in our new home....was a really weird experience as we basically done "nothing".

Yes my wife has worked pretty hard her entire life and likewise did I. I decided to retire at 40 years of age and spend more time with our kids (ages 7,8, and 13 now). I owned a business in Ohio and managed to sell it to a competitor that would ask every year if I'd sell.

I guess the most intimidating thing to me was that this is the "bible belt". There are some churches around here that are at least 500K sq ft and a majority of the population attends...however I'm not a church goer myself (my mother took me once for easter when I was maybe 8 years old). I envisioned folks knocking on our door asking us to attend church but no one has even ever mentioned religion or attending church to me since we have been here.

Also if you have Children Brentwood is a highly ranked school district (including private and prep schools). It is #4 in Tenn and I think it's in the top 200 of all high school in the U.S. My oldest is a Freshman and takes "honors" classes.....I'd say she has 2.5-3 hours of homework a night.

I am also not much of a country music fan (never listen to it) but there are a lot of those stars in the area. I live about 1/4 a mile away from Dolly. My neighbor is a big time producer in the industry and my other neighbor behind me does something with the group "Lady Antebellum". Oprah also lives here...you should see her house!!!!!

Is a nice area and if you ever need some insight then feel free to hit me up.

The exact number of British ships that took part in the Slave Trade will probably never be known but, in the 245 years between Hawkins first voyage and the abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807, merchants in Britain despatched about 10,000 voyages to Africa for slaves, with merchants in other parts of the British Empire perhaps fitting out a further 1,150 voyages.

Historian, Professor David Richardson, has calculated that British ships carried 3.4 million or more enslaved Africans to the Americas.

Only the Portuguese, who carried on the trade for almost 50 years after Britain had abolished its Slave Trade, carried more enslaved Africans to the Americas than the British (the most recent estimate suggests just over 5 million people).

Estimates, based on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance records, put the total number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12 million people.

Thu Oct 31, 2013, 03:33 AM

I haven't found that anywhere else - but I haven't looked a whole lot either.

Sure, they transported people. Many people had, and still do have, slaves. But we codified the idea that they were worth less than a whole person, right after we killed the people who were living here when when our "founders" arrived. Apparently many here still see that as unchanged, given the many incidents around us. Are there racists around the world? Absolutely. But this country has more people that are proud of it, I think, though that's just imo, a little experience, and what little research I have seen. ymmv.

88. No, but the notion of race as a biological category
Thu Oct 31, 2013, 03:40 AM
Oct 2013

developed in conjunction with the transatlantic slave trade. African slavery thrived on the Atlantic islands and in Brazil before it developed in this country. When the transatlantic trade began, Europeans justified it based on religion. Africans were inferior and their blackness signaled, Europeans believed, a darkness of soul. They could only be whitened and hence redeemed as Christians through slavery. Over time, race itself became the justification. Pseudo-scientific racism developed in both Europe and the American English colonies around the same time. There is no question it took on unique dimensions in this country, but we did not invent it from whole cloth.

90. Really? There was another country who wrote racism into their laws before us? Who?
Thu Oct 31, 2013, 03:57 AM
Oct 2013

I don't doubt that it evolved, but I think we turned into an art form, so to speak. Before that, even in Africa there were slaves, yes, but they had at least some rights, more like serfs and indentured servants than slaves, from what reading I have done in Zinn and a few others. Partly in order to hang onto the largess we acquired from their exploitation, however, we actually wrote racism into our law, and took it to a level that I can't find anywhere else.

Still think people ought to be stronger than mere words, however, which was my real point. Language matters, but so does how people react to it, and when the discussion becomes about how bad a word portrays someone, instead of, say, 6 million people who are too poor to get health care under this new law, which leaves them to the mercy of the Republican like the one in the OP, I don't see how it does anyone a favor.

But that's just me.

91. When race "was written into our laws"
Thu Oct 31, 2013, 04:48 AM
Oct 2013

we were a British colony, so Britain was the country that developed the laws. Read about the development of slavery in 17th century Virginia. But prior to that, African slavery was made legal, in contrast to Indigenous slavery, throughout Spanish and Portuguese America. Reading a high school US history text book doesn't teach you about the history outside the US. I pointed to some sources for you to read if you want to inform yourself.

If you don't think words matter, why even mention laws? Why read a book or comment on this message board? Or are the only words that don't matter the ones that denigrate women? People call women names like the poster above does, while simultaneously participating in a culture that perpetrates rape, domestic violence, and modern day slavery. The majority of those 6 million people too poor for health care are women and children, and the same cultural impulse that denigrates them as nothing more than body parts for male sexual use is the same that keeps them in poverty. Justifying treating people as inferior is exactly how poverty and inequality are perpetrated.

people substituting their self-righteous indignation over who is calling who what is of less import in someones life than not having food, housing, insurance, the rights vote, etc.

No, inequality and poverty are perpetuated by keeping people weak, by dangling shiny things in front of them for them to be distracted by, like two well-fed white women arguing on tv, as opposed to making sure they have access to food, medical care, housing, and training, and enough self-respect to tell someone that calls them a name to fuck off, and not worry about their peanut-sized outlook on life. I usually find self-important middle-class folks with an income are the ones who seem most aggrieved by the whole word thing, which is most enlightening.

But I can see why you would like to think otherwise, especially since you want to claim we live under the Constitution of Great Britain.

Whatever floats your boat, but I find this boring and a waste of time. Enjoy the echo.

Thu Oct 31, 2013, 07:30 PM

If you don't know what a colony is vs. an independent nation, what is the point of even trying to engage in a conversation about history? Take out that high school text book of yours and look up the world colony and see what you can make of it. Then figure out when the US became an independent nation. I've seen some low levels of knowledge of history in my time, but your inability to grasp such basic concepts takes the cake.

You've proclaimed what you think is important, and insist others don't have a right to talk about anything else. You mention poverty but want to ignore the fact that most of the BILLIONS who live in poverty around the world are women, and the majority of the millions of US residents impoverished are also women and children. That some of them have he nerve to become educated and middle class, however, is what really pisses you off.

You're all over the map but the one thread through all of your posts in this subthread is incoherence. You're pissed off that someone knows something about history. You began by erroneously trying to argue that the UK wasn't racist, but the main point all along seems to have been your insistence than women have no right to be upset by being called demeaning words. Your fumbling efforts to justify it historically feel flat, so now you resort to visceral resentment, which is the reason people use such language in the first place. On one hand, you seek to invalidate my views by denouncing "white middle class women," while simultaneously demonstrating a view of the world centered entirely around the US. You really shouldn't assume you have knowledge about the race and class of people you converse with online. You don't know a thing about my life. Let's keep it that way.

that neither we NOR they seem to have trouble "complaining" about.

It's only viewed as trivial -- as you seem to be doing -- when those words denigrate women.

John Lennon, at least, had the acuity to write that "Women are the 'Niggers' of the World"

and how people choose to feel about them than, say, the several million women who are too fucking poor to be able to take advantage of the ACA, for instance, while two well-fed middle class white women argue on tv.

But I guess everyone has their priorities.

97. Sorry, but it's not a question of "priorities"
Thu Oct 31, 2013, 08:51 AM
Oct 2013

because it's not an "either/or" situation -- One can be concerned about poverty and STILL react

negatively to slurs directed at a particular group of people.

If you doubt that, I invite you to read your own words and substitute "African Americans" for "women".

"What I said was there seems to be much more attention paid to words and how people choose to feel about them than, say, the several million women who are too fucking poor to be able to take advantage of the ACA, for instance, while two well-fed middle class white women argue on tv"

When you do that, you will see that you could say the EXACT same thing about African-Americans and the "n-word".

Given that reality, would you scold them for taking offense to racial slurs?...I don't think so,

and that would be the right choice...The only thing to do now is apply the same standard to women.

He said if people put a hand on you, you put them in the cemetery. He didn't say if they call you a name you don't like you should pout around like a little kid.

He told people to be strong, to own their businesses, to become robust and independent enough to not care what someone "said".

Here's an excerpt from the Field Negro Blog:

It's the 21st Century, but the house Negro is still here.

"...If you're afraid of black nationalism, you're afraid of revolution. And if you love revolution, you love black nationalism.

To understand this, you have to go back to what [the] young brother here referred to as the house Negro and the field Negro -- back during slavery. There was two kinds of slaves. There was the house Negro and the field Negro. The house Negroes - they lived in the house with master, they dressed pretty good, they ate good 'cause they ate his food -- what he left. They lived in the attic or the basement, but still they lived near the master; and they loved their master more than the master loved himself. They would give their life to save the master's house quicker than the master would. The house Negro, if the master said, "We got a good house here," the house Negro would say, "Yeah, we got a good house here." Whenever the master said "we," he said "we." That's how you can tell a house Negro.

If the master's house caught on fire, the house Negro would fight harder to put the blaze out than the master would. If the master got sick, the house Negro would say, "What's the matter, boss, we sick?" We sick! He identified himself with his master more than his master identified with himself. And if you came to the house Negro and said, "Let's run away, let's escape, let's separate," the house Negro would look at you and say, "Man, you crazy. What you mean, separate? Where is there a better house than this? Where can I wear better clothes than this? Where can I eat better food than this?" That was that house Negro. In those days he was called a "house nigger." And that's what we call him today, because we've still got some house niggers running around here."

...
*The field Negro was beaten from morning to night. He lived in a shack, in a hut; He wore old, castoff clothes. He hated his master. I say he hated his master. He was intelligent. That house Negro loved his master. But that field Negro -- remember, they were in the majority, and they hated the master. When the house caught on fire, he didn't try and put it out; that field Negro prayed for a wind, for a breeze. When the master got sick, the field Negro prayed that he'd die. If someone come [sic] to the field Negro and said, "Let's separate, let's run," he didn't say "Where we going?" He'd say, "Any place is better than here." You've got field Negroes in America today. I'm a field Negro. The masses are the field Negroes. When they see this man's house on fire, you don't hear these little Negroes talking about "our government is in trouble." They say, "The government is in trouble." Imagine a Negro: "Our government"! I even heard one say "our astronauts." They won't even let him near the plant -- and "our astronauts"! "Our Navy" -- that's a Negro that's out of his mind. That's a Negro that's out of his mind.
...

I agree with him. His effectiveness, by the way, is probably what got him murdered, by people who were about form more than substance. Like people who care about what they are called.

He cared about teaching people to be strong, strong enough that words will roll off their back like so much water.

I think today he would be about teaching millions of people that the government they have now would rather support the wealthy than make provisions for medical care for people who make so little that they can't afford health insurance under the bright, shiny, new ACA.

I'm not sure one could call them a name that disrespects them any worse than they are being disrespected now, and nothing is going to change that until they become stronger.

Think what you want. I have other things to do.

It does seem that you've dropped your former "gentlemanly" demeanor to reveal a decided hostility, LOL.

I'm sure it's tough for you to be outdone in an argument, especially, I suspect, to a woman, but, that being said, I'm afraid
your off base here -- I'd say it's more likely, in fact, that Malcom would have laughed in YOUR face, because for one thing, he was an intelligent man who understood simile and analogy and the fact that African Americans were not the ONLY people in the world to be oppressed - Sorry if you're having problems with those things.

Since you are clearly hostile to the idea of women's equality and their right NOT to be demeaned on the basis of their gender,
I would certainly question your place on a progressive board, not to mention your level of maturity and self-confidence.

Beyond that, for what it's worth, your misappropriating to women the philosophy of separatism that Malcom espoused for African Americans is seriously flawed.....Try again, or better yet, come back when you're mature enough to lose an argument with grace.

gerrymandering. It's a corrupt practice IMHO. Districting is supposed to be by population. It should also be geographical as close to a square or circle that can be managed. We sort of got rid of it here in California and magically our districts started reflecting more accurately the political majorities in the newly drawn districts.

The topic? Republican Freak Show Nominees:

Marsha Washburn, Marsha Washburn, Marsha Washburn
is my candidate for the right wing loony bin, a pretty southern belle plenty short on gravitas, enough for admission into this exclusive club, a woman that can utter her biases because this congressperson comes from a district gerrymandered the 200 miles between Memphis to the south of Nashville in search of repugs to support views that are so extreme, in a state so red-necky it allows guns in bars (if the guy packing heat doesn't drink, yeah! right), and, as if the Volunteer state was 19th century's Dodge City, its capital being the mecca for country music and crying in your beer while listening to "Possum" George Jones.

Moreover, my nominee Marsha is quicker with a fantastic right wing talking point/cliche than people not handicapped by her drawl.

Give credit where credit is due. What are you, people on this website, bigots? Southerners are fair game, despite Bill Maher's saying it is his favorite place for his shtick, with select, endangered liberals coming out of the woodwork to see and hear him.

Come on, folks. Marsha Washburn makes Marsha Brady look deep.
