New York City bans sale of cigarettes to under 21s

New York City (AFP) - New York City voted Wednesday to ban the sale of cigarettes, e-cigarettes and tobacco to anyone under the age of 21, raising the previous threshold of 18.

New York is the first large city to raise the age limit so high, a resolution that follows years of increasingly stringent laws on tobacco.

The federal age requirement for buying cigarettes is 18, which some states previously raised to 19.

A spokeswoman for New York City council said the proposal was approved by 35 votes to 10.

I used to smoke, I don't anymore, but I have been a follower.

First it's taxes, then it's selective bans, then it's regional bans, then it's an outright outlawing of a thing or things.

And just look at the governor and his attitude toward personal choices on everything from soft drinks to smoking to guns and I don't know what else.

Fascist.

Fucker.

Yes, that's $11 per pack.

18yr olds were paying that much? Really?

Raising taxes on cigarettes was one of Bloomberg's
first acts as Mayor in 2002.

It was also the same when I lived in Florida. No big deal. It is a good law. I am a smoker but I'm all for laws to prevent minors from smoking. It is an awful habit and I have been addicted since I was 16. I am 74 now and surprisingly still alive. I have tried everything to stop even hypnosis and nothing has worked. I have tried cold turkey and was climbing the walls after the first day.

I feel sorry for the residents of NYC. Their govt must not think that their residents are capable of making informed decisons for themselves.

We are in fact aware that young peoples brains are still forming into their 20s and more susceptible to addictive substances.

Your sympathy is unwarranted.

You can die for 'Merica at 18 but can't buy a pack of Marlboros in NYC until you're 21???????????????????? Complete and utter PC bullshit. Smoking is still legal as far as I know and it doesn't impair your senses like alcohol. Why the restriction to 21??????????

Nanny state nonsense.

If they genuinely cared about the health of young people, they would prohibit Army recruiting campaigns to send our youth to die in the Middle East.
