The couple doesn’t oppose firearms. Rather, they want to pass measures—like background checks—that keep them out of the wrong hands. "They turned an awful moment into a fight for commonsense gun laws," says close friend Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). "They never hesitated to come into the spotlight and stand for what they believe in."
Although her mind is as sharp as ever, speech remains difficult for Giffords, and Kelly has a knack for finding the words when his wife cannot, a gift that comes as no surprise to those who know them best.
"They were two halves that became whole when they met," says friend and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.). "He’s her rock, her quarterback." And while Giffords continues to recover (yoga is a new addition to her regimen), Kelly stands in awe of his wife. "Gabby inspires me to deny the acceptance of failure," he says. "I feel it when she walks faster than she did the day before. When her smile lifts the spirits of a room full of people. She is proof that the human spirit can triumph in the face of tragedy."
Tragedy, Giffords says, is not something she cares to dwell on. "Every day I’m reminded that life is a gift," she says. "We cannot waste a single day fearing big challenges."
