Father upset after child finds Muslim book at school fair

http://mdjonline.com/view/full_story/23925195/article-Father-upset-after-child-finds-Muslim-book-at-school-fair?mobile_view=false

MARIETTA — When Thomas Prisock began to read the book his daughter brought home from her school’s book fair, he was shocked.

“It’s an indoctrination of Muslim culture,” he said.

The book, “Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: a Muslim Book of Colors” by Hena Khan, came from his daughter’s school book fair this week. She attends Dowell Elementary School in west Cobb.

“I don’t want this culture around my children, let’s get them educated first. Learn to read and write before we start teaching (about) the fanaticals,” Prisock said.

Does he mean "fanaticals" like himself?

Intolerant and hateful. I hope their kids don't end up the same way.

Schools should not provide any religious material of any denomination. In countries where religious fanaticism flourish, their children are taught such mysticism at an early age. Teach the kids reading, writing, science, arts and common sense, not religion. Religion is the last resort, when science can't explain something.

... and other "social studies" should not be taught at all? This book was not religious material, but it did show how people live in another part of the world. Should that be disallowed?

If children are to understand the world they live in, these subjects need to be taught.

But don't provide whole books on how Dick nails himself to a cross or Jane folds her prayer mat.

"reality" these days is too often in the eyes of the beholder… religion is history, is arts, is mythology, is geography and sociology.. I believe it is crucial that we introduce to children and teach them all the wonders and curiosities of the world… the book in question is a delightful, colorful introduction to an important part of our world…

Then they should not tiptoe around the fact that religion is the root of indescribable horror and death of innocents, not just pretty pictures and clever rhymes. Meanwhile, the senseless killings continue.

with that I agree… but it is also our heritage, beautiful art, wondrous stories, and "pretty pictures and clever rhymes"

…we do not tiptoe when children are young… we teach age appropriate materials and as they mature the pictures widen to include more as they can begin to comprehend and sort out…

this father in the story was outraged about his child being introduced to the positive ideas in Muslim culture, only thinking of the negative (sad that he does not comprehend the horrors that Christianity has wrought on the world)… we are more than the negative… we are complex humans in a complex world and religion is the bases of much of our tradition, ritual and way of life…

our children deserve exposure to all of it (in time)… when my children were little I tried to expose them to all the wonders and beautiful things in the world… soon enough, they were introduced to the not so wonderful…

to deny our children a worldview, a different perspective (when appropriate) is unfair and backwards thinking
