The reason is this:
I want EVERYONE to have the medical care they need even if it means paying for it in a group plan. I want EVERYONE who is on Medicare, Medicaid, and other social medicine programs to get the care they need.
I have no problem paying for these things through a private insurance or with tax dollars. It's the right thing to do if it means helping others get the medical care they need.
If you don't want to pay for a medically related issue you personally won't need...too fucking bad.

Start working towards single payer or public options in blue states. Winning there will be much, much easier than winning nationally. Once we have single-payer in blue states, the lack of dead people will destroy the anti-single-payer FUD, and the low costs will make more states want to sign up.
Then we go after single-payer again nationally. With many states already on single-payer, it will be a fairly easy fight.
THAT is why the Republicans are so desperate to stop the ACA. Not because of what it is today. But because of where it will lead.

(2,674 posts)What is insurance? It is to insure you have financial help in case something bad happens. I have been paying homeowner's insurance for over 30 years to cover things like my house burning down, lightning hitting it, a child falling off my wall and breaking their arm and so on. these things have never happened. I live in Dallas, but I am paying insurance that covers me for hurricane damage. Someone who lives down in Corpus Christi is paying to cover hail damage which will probably never happen there. Same for car insurance, it covers all kinds of situations that probably won't happen. So why are we worrying about what medical insurance covers.
Folks you are beating a dead horse, these conversations are not going anywhere.
