The association -- called "Pretty, curvy, sexy and fine with it" -- filed the complaint at the prosecutor's office in the western city of Saintes, accusing the haute couture star of "defamatory and discriminatory comments", its president Betty Aubriere said.
The Chanel designer, who lost 42 kilos (93 pounds) more than a decade ago and wrote a book about it, has periodically criticised overweight people and lauded thinness.
"No one wants to see curvy women on the catwalk", he is cited as saying in the recently published book "The world according to Karl", which collates some of his most famous quotes.
He repeated this on television earlier this month, and said France's healthcare system was struggling partly because of "all the illnesses contracted by people who are too fat."
"It's the fat women sitting in front of televisions with their pack of crisps who say slim models are hideous", he was also quoted as saying in the book.

(5,957 posts)They are probably the most qualified. They have interracted with women for decades, through all stages of their lives (as well as their own). They've seen more women and probably known more (in a physical way) than a young man. They've had more time to appreciate the inner beauty in women. Who would have a more informed opinion about beauty in a woman than an old man?
nice try tho

(24,096 posts)and deem them so knowledgeable and special and experts on 'womenz' because of their length of time on this earth.
I don't see it that way - I see these farty old men thinking they are like buyers at a slave or meat market and their judgement marks worth of another human being because, well, they're old and wise and all that shit. lol.

(32,086 posts)I guess Mr. Lagerfeld had never looked at a men's magazine, like "Playboy". Nothing but curvy women in them. I dare say it's more than the "fat, crisp-eating" women who don't think that women who look like underweight adolescent boys are all that.
On edit: That this photo is someone else was posted while I was writing my post. I see the photo posted by MADem. I stand by my .

He looks like the crypt keeper....and if he thinks the "fingerless gloves" trick (to hide age spotted hands) is fooling anyone, he might want to check the portraits of elderly Victorian dowagers...because he looks like he's channeling them!
That said, I don't know if the suit will prevail. He's an idiot, and idiots say stupid things.

(63,216 posts)I'm not defending ol' Karl's idiocy, but what is the basis of the suit?

(37,748 posts)"what is the basis of the suit...?"
Defamatory and discriminatory comments as per the article.
Orrex
(63,216 posts)Defamatory how? Discriminatory how?
He's expressing his opinion, and he's been in the catwalk business for decades, so he'd probably be given a good deal of latitude when it comes to assessing what people want to see on catwalks, even if he's an asshole opinion.

(37,748 posts)I was merely answering the specific question posed, regardless of whether one agrees with the premise of the suit or not.
Orrex
(63,216 posts)Still, it seems like a ridiculous law suit and unlikely to do anything except benefit the asshole.

(25,921 posts)I think it's a legal complaint, with the end goal being a fine for Lagerfeld.
Orrex
(63,216 posts)I mean, someone could as readily (and maybe should) sue the Miss America Pageant for not showcasing plus-sized women.
I would be simply amazed if Lagerfeld suffers anything more than a bit of finger-wagging and a lot of free press exposure over this.

(6,913 posts)French jurisprudence allows such a complaint for insulting a group of people about their appearance? If we allowed such litigation, the courts would be even more jammed than they are.

He's probably had more botox and fillers than half of Hollywood. It still doesn't matter--he looks dreadful.

(20,317 posts)his comment was about haute couture fashion shows. The models in those shows are canvases; clothing hangers. The designs they're wearing aren't meant to flatter a regular female frame. They're more like cloth works of art than they are garments.

(20,317 posts)Has he made other comments that betray a sort of bigotry towards fat people? It sounds like it-- but this particular comment was about catwalks.

(89,252 posts)and when she did lose some weight he gave himself credit. but she most likely lost weight because she was planning to have a baby and she had said she would only change her weight based on health.
