Police say a cellphone saved a Florida gas station clerk from a robber's bullet.
Winter Garden Police said in an email that a clerk had just minor injuries after a robber fired a bullet at his abdomen. Police say his cellphone stopped it.

The suspect fired a round at one of the clerks and fled.
Police say the worker had no idea the bullet had hit his cellphone until he pulled it out of his shirt pocket.

(16,191 posts)Battery punctures can cause severe fires, so battery manufacturers do everything they can to make them as rigid as possible. They also increasingly use designs borrowed from the military to distribute impacts over the face of the battery to reduce piercing. Many are now rigid enough to stop a small caliber bullet fired at a distance, but only just barely. At close range, or with a larger caliber handgun, the bullet would have still punched through.
Years ago there was another story about a jogger who was saved from a muggers bullet by his iPod, back when Apple was still using metal frames and stainless steel backplates (it's all aluminum nowadays). Between the battery, the frame, and the stainless steel back panel, it actually stopped a larger caliber bullet fired at close range (9mm, almost point blank if I remember right). Nobody makes devices like that anymore!
