http://www.leadertelegram.com/opinions/letters_to_editor/article_769565fc-f6d6-5614-a8d7-dc90e240f9df.htmlNow that the Tea Party-inspired hostage crisis in government is over, the next battle we're going to hear about is the national debt and the deficit spending from which the debt arises.
Before anyone starts throwing bombs over the issue, it would be well to review a couple simple facts.
There are essentially two kinds of debt (or maybe more accurately, two poles on the debt spectrum).
One kind of debt occurs when you borrow a lot of money to take all your rowdy friends on a year-long binge and casino tour. On a national level, this equates to going into the hole while building a military you don't need, fighting stupid wars, pouring Treasury money into bonuses for the bankers who already pocketed billions while gambling away your inheritance, and so on.
The other kind of debt is where you borrow money to improve your house, get an education and fix your car so you can get to work. On a national level, this would equate to borrowing to put people to work building a 21st-century infrastructure that includes a high-speed transcontinental rail system, providing the whole country with broadband Internet access, building a green energy network, setting up a true national health system, and similar things that result in improving people's lives and healing the planet.
Conservatives typically favor the former kind of debt, and progressives support the latter.
Conservatives have for decades played a game of indulging in unfunded spending binges when in power, then using the debt they run up with nothing to show for it as an excuse to prevent the progressives from creating the second kind of debt, the kind that advances our national well-being.
And I'm getting really fed up with this stupid game.

(38,562 posts)The only thing I would have added that the second kind of debt ends up being smaller because it creates jobs which creates tax-payers.

Excellent letter, Jackpine! K&R from me too, and bookmarked!
Agreed! Well-put, simple, and straightforward. Which means they STILL probably won't get it.

(2,124 posts)... and therefore reduces the overall debt. More mass transit means more employment means more tax revenue means lower debt. Similar things can be said about investments in education and research.
I was happy to hear Larry Summers say as much in an interview with NPR while he poo-pooed the hysteria about the (falling) national debt. And I'm hardly a fan of Larry Summers.

(2,962 posts)With vivid imagery. Republicans never worry about the national debt when they're the ones racking it up. Strange.

(4,757 posts)We get a better return when we spend the money here in america for the benefit of all Americans. Their way just benefits the few at the expense of the many.

(9,895 posts)I fully intend to blatantly plagerize your thoughts with the moniker "Well, SOME say..." and send it to every media outlet I can.
I want to see this quoted and referenced all the way from the local county weekly to the metropolitian daily to the radio call-ins and the media-whoring cable shows...I will be REALLY happy when I see it referenced on the floor of the House and Senate and then by the talking heads on network TV!
You are 100% right and I am also sick and tired of the drunken frat boys of the Republican Party going off on binges that destroy the nation's finances and leave us nothing but the bill and smoldering crater.

I just posted the newspaper ver. to my FB page, as most of my groups there have vast quantities of conservatives.
I still love DU, but it's choir preaching and average Americans have to reach across the aisle if we are to solve problems.
