Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDU Mentioned on 'De Hoax Wijzer' (Dutch site??) as a 'conspiracy theory' site
https://sites.google.com/site/dehoaxwijzer/english-articlesThey have a 'Black List: websites to avoid', where they list WND, Above Top Secret, Global Truth, Rense, Mercola, etc.
And then there's DU:
Democratic Underground (www.democraticunderground.com) - focusses on conspiracy theories such as Illuminati, New World Order, chemtrails (which you kill with vinegar?), Codex Alimentarius, aliens, Sandy Hook shooting denial, and other paranoid fantasies.
Not sure how they may have lost context in translation!
I noticed that they have no entry for FR.

(49,212 posts)There was a rather embarrassing incident where some idiot blamed the Boxing Day tsunami on GWB having a weather control machine, and then was quoted major papers, which is probably how DU got on the screening company's radar.

(15,036 posts)Got so bad, the Administrators had to ban all such blather.
And that's hardly the only conspiracy theory that's had credence here, just one of the wackiest.
Everything weighted evenly over the years, I'd have to say calling this a "conspiracy theory site" is a bit of a stretch, if not highly inaccurate. But it's not like this place hasn't given some memorable reasons to warrant being looked at askance.

Any site that doesn't list the Freepers as a CT site and lists DU as such, is extremely suspect.
I'll check it out. Frankly who cares what some unknown, never-before-heard-of, what seems to be a Right Wing site has to say??

(5,477 posts)and the page with the 'blacklist' also called out the other site (correctly, it seems - the one I was trying to find out about is a quack type of site, with all sorts of 'miracle' cancer cures and a lot of other things that a cousin of mine is always quoting). The site seems to be more of a place that warns people of hoaxes, quack medicine, and other things that are floating around on the net.
But yeah, if they only looked at a select few fora here I can see how they could come up with the wrong impression.

Says He started it last Dec. Any DUer could do the same thing and I would give more credibility to someone who at least has some background than a lonely guy somewhere in Europe who doesn't give any information on what gives him the creds to be taken seriously . Certainly his inclusion of DU seems to indicate either an agenda, which I suspect, a banned DUer perhaps, or a total lack of skills to properly research the subject his blog is about.
I'm going with a former, angry DUer which is about as credible a conclusion as any he has come to.
Most of his listings appear to be 'left leaning'. He throws in one right leaning site to appear 'balanced' imo. Too bad he got any attention at all from this site, which may have been the goal.
From my pov, the blog itself is a bit of a CT site with about as much credibility.
I'd stick to more credible sites if I wanted to know who else was credible.
He says he is STILL a 'one man operation' and I have a feeling that it will stay way considering how he comes to his conclusions.
Not worth the time wasted on it already.

Maybe one of them will contact that site and tell them to find someone who knows how to read English.

(5,477 posts)The site doesn't seem to have a political bent; they appear to be pretty much what they claim to be in their home page (see below). It's pretty much a one-man operation, and he says that while Snopes and Hoax-Slayer are very good, the main problem is that they are only in English.
From wandering around the site they seem to be operating along the same lines as Snopes or Hoax Slayer - reasoned articles debunking hoaxes, urban legends, and conspiracy theories.
I don't know what kind of traffic they get; their forums aren't super-active, but there is a decent amount of content on the site
From their page (translated to English):
Why the Hoax-Pointer?
It is important to educate yourself well before you accept information for truth, and this spread. For that reason, there are also plenty of websites on the Internet that attempt to refute false information and to inform people as accurately as possible. Some well-known - and reliable - websites are www.snopes.com and www.hoax-slayer.com , although there are many other "hoax busters" and "myth busters".
Why the Hoax-Pointer, in addition to many other websites? Most of these websites are exclusively in English, which of course in itself is a good thing since it most of the world can be achieved. Nevertheless, there are still people whose knowledge of the English language is not as strong, and it is unfortunate that warnings you ignore them. Moreover, not all hoaxes English only: there are also many cases in English, that escape because of the language difference on the radar of Snopes.com and Hoax-Slayer.com. The Hoax-Pointer we also try to intercept it, although we will of course send out warnings of foreign language hoaxes.
