Catastrophic medical care costs have gotten so obscenely high, and non-employment based insurance has been unattainable

A lot of people probably thought they were protecting themselves to some degree

When I was younger with no family and $1000s in the bank and never going to the doctor, all I wanted was something cheap to cover me if I needed $10,000s in medical costs. There were good policies that provided that coverage (and the ones I had did have some preventative care and prescription drugs coverage to make it less likely that I'd need $10,000). I paid for broken bones and stitches out of my pocket, but still came out well ahead financially each year but one and in total over 7+ years by $1000s. Those policies were a VERY good way for ME to share risk with other people LIKE ME (which is what insurance is).

Just because that policy isn't right for you (or me now) it doesn't mean it's shitty. Insurance is about sharing risk and people should be able to share risk with people like them to the extent that they are comfortable - if they are doing it through a private company. The government can remove all of that risk with single payer, but that's not what the ACA is trying to do, and it does limit good as well as shitty plans.

I would have saved a ton under ACA. For years I carried a private policy in addition to employers plan so I could tell them to stuff it without worrying about insurance.

Folks are getting better insurance, and a better health system. That costs shortterm. It needs other major changes too.

But, they gotta make it better for everyone. Not sure they have.
