Remember that judge in Tennessee who changed the baby's name from Messiah?

She's in trouble. She violated the the US Constitution
http://www.thecourierexpress.com/news/national/article_c9ace4eb-39ff-5a34-9ae6-eb118b38c2bd.html
<snip>
An East Tennessee magistrate who ordered a baby's name changed from Messiah to Martin has been charged with violating the state's Code of Judicial Conduct.

Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew ordered the name change during a paternity hearing in Newport on Aug. 8.

At the time, the parents were disputing the 8-month-old baby's surname. Mother, Jaleesa Martin, hoped to keep the name she had given the boy_ Messiah Deshawn Martin _ and father, Jawaan McCullough, wanted the baby to bear his last name.

"Labeling this child `Messiah' places an undue burden on him that as a human being, he cannot fulfill," the order said.

That decision was overturned in Cocke County Chancery Court the following month, with the judge saying that Ballew's ruling violated the U.S. Constitution.

On Wednesday, a panel of the Tennessee Board of Judicial Conduct filed formal charges against Ballew.

And frankly, even if she may have been concerned about the "burden" of this boy's name, she shouldn't have brought her personal religious beliefs in like she did, IMHO.

I mean, I do honestly think the judge had a valid opinion when she said that "Labeling this child `Messiah' places an undue burden on him that as a human being, he cannot fulfill,", even if she may be devoutly religious.

With that said, though, I do sympathize with the little fella's parents, and I'm happy that they were able to keep his original name intact.

Are people named Robin burdened with that name because, as a human being, they can't fulfill the burden of being a Robin? What about kids named Rose? They can't actually be roses.

People are all the time named after things they can't actually, as human beings, be.

Dick Grayson got too big for the tights and became his own hero, Nightwing. He also filled in as Batman while Bruce was dead.
The second Robin was Jason Todd. He was killed off because readers hated him then brought back as an anti-hero.
Third was Tim Drake. He was great but with DC rebooting their whole line, he's now known as Red Robin.
Fourth was Stephanie Brown. Then she accidentally started a gang war, was sexually tortured by Black Mask and Leslie Thompkins let her die to teach Bruce a lesson. She was brought back when teh readers pointed out that this destroyed Leslie's character but with teh reboot, it's unclear if she still exists.
Fifth was Damien Wayne, Bruce's son (with Talia al Ghul). A lot of the readers hated him, the writer loved him but he was recently killed off as well.
Six was Carrie Kelly. She was Robin in Frank Miller's out-of-continuity Dark Knight Returns and it's atrocious sequel.

And yes, I'm a massive geek

I assume that with names like Jaleesa and Jawaan that the parents are black, if I may be pardoned for stereotyping in this instance, but who said the judge is white?

The point is that the child's first name was not an issue brought before the court and the judge had no business ruling on it, regardless of how she felt about it.

I hope Messiah has a long and happy life free of playground taunts.

or "M".. I cannot see him liking the obvious "Messi" or "Mess"..

As someone who was given an "unusual" name, I can tell you it's soooooooo much better to name a child a common name and then CALL them /NICKNAME them anything you like.

It sucks to be a kid whose name is always mispronounced/misspelled...and parents often project THEIR wishes for a child when then name him/her. You NEVER know what kind of a kid you will get..

If it's a family name, that's a different kettle of fish.

We had a friend who named their little guy "Bruno Maximillian" and he was anything BUT a "Bruno-Maximillian".. I hope he grew into his name, but when we knew them, he was a timid little guy with thick glasses, had asthma and a shitload of allergies...and stammered.. When asked what his name was, he would say "Bwoono".

Judges are supposed to make LEGAL decision based on the law. They are not supposed to force their personal, religious beliefs onto the rest of us, against our will.

How do these people not see how radical, self-centered and stupid this is?

Fundies do tend to be very protective of their religious idols & Christ......so I'm not sure that she would have been happy about a white couple doing this, either. With that said, though, perhaps racism, or at least some sort of prejudice, can't be ruled out either, IMO.
