General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCan we have a 12 hour Purge at DU?
The movie The Purge came out recently. The plot: one day a year--' for 12 hours ---Americans are allowed to commit any type of crime that they felt like commiting. Murder, Robbery. ...any crime...and get away with it.
The thinking was if we let it happen for one 12 hour period it would keep the rest of the year crime free. 12 hours-- one day a year anything goes....the rest of the year, peace.
Why not something like that here on DU. Let us say anything we want for 12 hours. Douchebag, troll, freeper, your mother wears Army boots.... whatever we want.
We can even make fun of Skinners name.
Something to seriously consider.
Yours truly,
trumad

Why don't we try for 12 hours of civility instead? That would be different.

There are so many better ways to tell someone what you think of them.
Some of them are so good, sometimes the other person can't even come up with a reply.
You get to tell someone off, they are stymied, and you don't get a post hidden.
I mean, there are so many truly intelligent people here on DU. It never ceases to amaze me how seldom some of them fail to utilize the English language, going instead for the vulgar and rude.
I dunno...
sorry...I didn't mean to lecture. I just enjoy seeing people using wit (instead of obscenity) when dealing with trolls and jackasses...
I'll shut up now.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)or what i tend to see as catty behavior. yes it is obvious, and some of us prefer not to approach life in that manner. if we truly have something to say, we say it clearly and take the repercussions instead of playing catty little games.
i hear what you are saying, but i never really respected that approach in life
meh
each their own, right pipi?
take it any way you like.
I'm saying I didn't mean to lecture. If you took it that way, then I'm sorry for that. But please don't tell me I meant to do something when you do not have the ability to read my mind or know what my intentions were.
As for the thing about not playing catty little games, is that a hard and fast rule?
If B (an anonymous, faceless person) says something A doesn't like on an internet discussion group, it's all fine and dandy to say "Fuck you" because at least it's not playing catty little games. It's "telling it like it is".
But if B (who is one's boss, or one's mom, or one's clergyman, etc.) says something A doesn't like, is it also OK to say "Fuck you" to that person?
Anybody who says it is OK (and actually does it) is a lot braver than I am, that's for sure.
So, IMO, anybody who can control him/herself in the second situation can also control him/herself in the first situation but chooses not to, for whatever reason.
Maybe because it feels so good to verbally abuse some anonymous human being on the internet.
Whatever.
OK, I'm done. I mistakenly thought that this might be something we could discuss as adults, but since I'm being accused of having some catty little agenda, let's drop the whole thing.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)I said I was done.

(68,918 posts)At Thu Oct 24, 2013, 11:00 AM an alert was sent on the following post:
Can we have a 12 hour Purge at DU?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023912795
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
How about we just learn to stop calling people names and them whining when our posts get hidden? The Meta forum was removed for a reason.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Oct 24, 2013, 11:13 AM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I would vote to hide the alert message for being a personal attack before I would vote to hide the alerted upon message.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

The U.S.S. Enterprise is investigating Beta III, where the U.S.S. Archon disappeared over 100 years before.
When the landing party exhibits strange behavior, Kirk sends another party down to investigate. They find the culture on Beta III is quiescent, with no creative tendencies. The entire culture is controlled by a group of 'lawgivers' known as "The Body" which is, in turn, controlled by the omniscient Landru. The inhabitants change from normal, peaceful people to a violent mob at the coming of the Red Hour. This 'Festival' is the society's only outlet for the tyrannical hold that Landru has over them at all other times.
Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Enterprise is being pulled from its orbit, its crew to be absorbed into the Body. This, they discover, is what happened to the U.S.S. Archon, so many years before.
Archon survivors have formed an underground of sorts to fight the Body, and they help Kirk and Spock reach Landru. Landru turns out to be an incredibly complex computer built by Landru, a scientist who lived 6,000 years before, who wanted to guide his people into a peaceful, civilized progress.
Landru had affected the computer with his scientific thoughts and memories, but not his wisdom. For centuries the computer, 'Landru,' has been interpreting his suggestions to the point that no one is allowed independent thought. Kirk tells the computer that instead of helping to nurture the culture of Beta III, it has harmed it. Landru destroys itself, leaving the Betans to work toward the sort of culture Landru had wanted so many centuries before. With the promise of Federation help on the way, Kirk and his crew beam back to the U.S.S. Enterprise.

(146,317 posts)in a Skinner post. That's not going to happen, certainly, and neither is your free-for-all day. Instead, DU is probably going to become more civil, once the reality of the new rules about hidden posts takes effect.

Anyhow--I've had some run ins the last couple of days and faced some juries that smacked me around a bit---some deserved, a few not. I know I run that fine line---always have, probably always will. I may end up like Omar* at the end and go suicide by jury.
If we can't manage civil discourse, and I have failed before, and been smacked by a jury for it, then what can we hope to accomplish? What discussions are best served by mocking people's names, or by insulting them?
I'd vote no, but you wisely refrained from making this a poll.

(75,480 posts)would have effects that last much longer than the 12 hours, the grieving families of murder victims, the other victims who stood personal losses from theft and so on. On the other hand, we would then know who the murderers and thieves are.
It would be the same at DU. The consequences would last longer than the twelve hours but we will know who are the real trolls and disrupters.

(111,277 posts)but that would be a 12 hour period during which I'd be absent. I don't actually like having the tone of posts here lowered by a lot of ad homs. Besides, there's a lot of latitude on this site to let people know exactly what you think of them via the oblique insult.
It wouldn't even be much fun to take people off my ignore list for that 12 hours to bedevil them with assessments of their ancestry, anatomy, proclivities, and ultimate destination.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)a point I tried to make somewhere upthread.
It's the difference between
Lady Nancy Astor: Winston, if you were my husband, I'd poison your tea.
Winston Churchill: "Fuck you.
And...
Lady Nancy Astor: Winston, if you were my husband, I'd poison your tea.
Winston Churchill: Nancy, if I were your husband, I'd drink it.
It takes much more wit to come up with the second reply than the first.
Sadly, too many people think "Fuck you" is the epitome of wit, creativity, and eloquence.

(146,317 posts)An excellent example. Winston Churchill was a master at the appropriate and civil comeback that ends the conversation.
Wit, indeed.
