72. You know absolutely nothing about baseball.
Thu Oct 24, 2013, 03:19 AM
Oct 2013

Its been called the World Series for 110 years. For several decades the USA was the only country in the world that even had professional baseball players or a professional baseball league. The championship series, starting in 1903, was called The World Series because the winner was the best professional baseball team in the world. It was strictly an American sport. Today there are several countries playing the game, but none of them have anything remotely close to the talent in the Major Leagues or an organization anywhere remotely close to Major League Baseball. That talent is now combined from several countries but the majority of the players are still Americans.

Why change the name when anybody other than an idiot knows that Major League Baseball is the ultimate when it comes to that sport. The greatest players in the world, either Americans or otherwise, choose to play Major League Baseball.

And the other poster already agreed there are no other nations with teams in the National League or American League. What other leagues make it to the World Series then? The playoffs are between those two leagues.

So there is no reason to call it the World Series since it's purely an American competition for American teams and leagues. So of course the greatest players come here to play, where else are they going to go pro and make that kind of money? They also get scouted, so they are sought after and brought here.

Hahaha... I don't know why you are getting so bent out of shape about it. Lol. omg... this is too funny.

So anyway, now you can see I do know about baseball. I even know how to score a touchdown and make a slam dunk.

If other countries want to compete in Major League Baseball, then why don't you go help them get their team started. You can be the first to attempt it. Until then, the best professional baseball team in the world is the winner of the MLB World Series, and anybody other than an idiot knows it. Put down the bong and go to bed.

Edit to Add: It is also not financial possible to have Major League Baseball teams all over the world. A 162 game schedule already has teams flying from New York to LA on Friday, to Toronto on Monday, and to Miami on Thursday. Imagine flying to China on Friday, to Australia on Monday, and to Europe on Thursday. When the road trip is over, then you fly back to New York and play a game the next day. Trying to make Major League Baseball international like you want would kill it. Hell, for over 80+ years Major League Baseball teams were all located in the eastern part of the country. Financially, the only possible foreign expansion out of the USA and Canada would be Mexico.

There's so much history and quirkiness to Fenway. I've seen some really memorable games there...Roger Moret pitching a 1 hitter against the Sox (Richie Allen's weak infield hit spoiling that), Reggie Jackson hitting a couple of rocket shot homers into Right Field - I just missed snagging one, and a Bill Lee game where he used his "Euphous Pitch" that really messed up a few hitters. And I'll never forget being on Landsdowne St. for the the 75 WS game against Cincinnati when Carlton Fisk hit that barely fair homer over the Green Monster - the place went absolutely nuts.

The thing that surprises people on their first visit to Fenway is how small it really is...TV seems to make the park look larger than life.

PS...one of my earliest memories of the Sox was them playing the Cards in the '67 WS. Man, what a bummer...Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton were absolutely awesome...

I guess they think it adds to the intensity of the game. I find all those close-ups disturbing, and I often have to glance away. Otoh, it beats the old days, when they covered a game with 3 cameras - one in the upper deck behind the plate and one at each dugout.

That seems weird to me. I don't think that happens with, say, the Super Bowl.

And that leads me to an assumption. See, I never watch the Super Bowl, and not just because my team isn't in it. I don't have a team. It's just that I hate football.

But I do like baseball pretty much (though I don't have the patience for a whole long game these days). So I tune in to the playoffs a bit and now the series. I don't watch the whole game, but I check in.

My assumption is that people just don't much like baseball all that much these days ... unless their team is in it, I guess.

Do you watch the NBA playoffs and finals if your team isn't in it?

They get constant coverage on SportsCenter and after watching it every day (not my choice, they put it on at lunch at the office) I get sick and tired of hearing about them. If the media would cover all teams equally or AT LEAST cover them based on merit, I'd be less resentful. True, the Yankees are the absolute worst in this regard, and at least they didn't make the playoffs this year.

When an underdog from a small market gets into the World Series, I'll be more excited.

I kept thinking back to the 1968 season. I was 20. And just like now, in 1967 the city was set on fire. Sic transit Gloria mundi.

May the best team win. I very may watch, although I'd rather watch the 68 series on DVD.

I knew how much it would have meant to the city of Detroit. Boston's year would have been extraordinary, even if they had lost to Tampa or Detroit in the playoffs, given the fiasco's of the past 2 years. You guys have awesome pitchers in Verlander and Scherzer, but what's up with Prince? He seemed to mail it in. That flop and tag out at 3rd on the rundown is going to be a classic GIF.

That's my guess, although now I think the term is antiquated, especially since Japan and Latin America are very much contenders. You do hear "Fall Classic" used, but I think World Series is here to stay.

It would be cool, though, if there could be a true "World" Series, like the little leaguers play.

Given that the Sawx are division rivals to my Orioles, can't stand to see them win it. I actually liked their fanbase a lot before they got all cocky after 2004, but now they are nearly as insufferable as Yankee fans. Mind you, I said "nearly." I don't think any fanbase will ever dethrone the Yankees fanbase in terms of sheer obnoxiousness.

That being said, the Cardinals won it just two years ago. I would rather see a fresh team play to win it all, one that hasn't celebrated in recent years. Preferably one from Baltimore named after an orange and black bird. Or maybe one from my current state, Florida, named after a sea creature.

Mainly, I'm following it because it's baseball, and baseball is the greatest sport that has been and will ever been invented by man. Not the most exciting match-up for me this year, though.

Sometimes I miss the pre-04 fan base. It was mostly a blue collar crowd. The obnoxious ones are mostly college kids from out of state. You used to be able to get cheap bleacher seats too, but that crowd was pretty rough. It is kind of annoying seeing pink Sox hats all over the country, knowing they didn't tough it out through the hard times.

Winning a few rings is great, but it does bring out the bandwagon fans. Most of the pink hatters don't really understand the history and traditions of the game. I think loyal fans of small market teams are probably the best fans in the game.
