NOW he was speaking about how the British taxing the 1% was a failure.

(17,865 posts)We are only one of two countries that pursue income made by our residents in other countries.
Our procedure for renouncing citizenship/becoming a citizen of another country is the immediate liquidation of U.S. assets at current tax rates and payment of those taxes.
When you give up your citizenship, you should not expect our embassy/state department to go to bat for you if get into trouble.
Also good luck in getting a visa to come back to this country to visit family and friends.

Obama is talking about going back to Clinton levels, 35% I think. Even the GOP and Bush all voted for going back to Clinton levels, because they put a sunset on the Bush tax cuts. The sunset wasn't done by the dems, because no dems voted for the cuts. The sunset was all GOP, including Santorum.

So even if a rich American moves their money to, say, Switzerland or Singapore or Belize, they are obligated to pay income taxes on - for example - interest earned on that money, even if it's interest on principal in Switzerland, and even if the income is earned there.
And given how many clandestine accounts he had all over the world, he has to know that this claim is false.
