Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) said on Wednesday afternoon that their female colleagues can take most of the credit for driving the compromise that is expected to temporarily reopen the U.S. government and raise the debt ceiling before Thursday's deadline.
"Leadership, I must fully admit, was provided primarily from women in the Senate," McCain said after the bipartisan deal was announced.
Pryor said that people sometimes like to joke about women in leadership, but he is a huge fan of his female colleagues after watching them negotiate. "The truth is, women in the Senate is a good thing," he said. "We're all just glad they allowed us to tag along so we could see how it's done."
Following weeks of stagnation, The New York Times reported on Monday that a bipartisan group of women senators was playing a crucial role in opening discussions between Republicans and Democrats over how to move forward and reopen the government. Out of the 14 senators on the bipartisan committee that laid the framework for the debt deal, six were women. Susan Collins (R-Maine) started the group, and Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) took part in negotiations.

Who saved what would have been a lot more grief to come.
A Damn good change for the politics in this country to get more intelligent women in power,Maybe they could neuter a few of these teabaggers ( just kidding),But all levity aside I think that it would be great to see

Senator Barbara Mikulski hosts a dinner every month for ALL of the 20 female U.S. Senators.

... and they still meet monthly for off-the-record dinners, which Mikulski organizes.
In fact, in these polarizing political times, the dinners are one of the last bastions of bipartisanship.
"It's a very important way for us to know each other as people," she says.
Despite partisan differences, Mikulski has used the dinners to help the female senators forge relationships, which she says help them understand each other across party and regional lines when it comes to policy.
"We do know each other and we have developed real affection and respect for one another," she says.

The women of the Senate meet about once every six weeks for a dinner on Capitol Hill, organized by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), known as "the dean" of the female senators. Mikulski is a trailblazer for female senators: she is the longest-serving woman in Congress and this year became the first-ever female head of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

"We have a very, very respected rule that what we talk about there never leaves the room," McCaskill said. "So these are pretty free-wheeling discussions, and we have averted some legislative logjams by some of our discussions at those dinners. I think we're all determined to use those opportunities to try to move things along."
