Martin Bashir just read the GOP the riot act by quoting Oliver Cromwell

... when he closed out Parliament circa 1653.

I'll try to get the whole quote, but it was not only vintage, it was absolutely hilarious in context. Most of those idjits have no idea who Cromwell was -- but they will surely get it that they have been roundly excoriated. Probably don't know what "excoriated" means either.

It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter'd your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil'd this sacred place, and turn'd the Lord's temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress'd, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

much appreciated. After all this time, the words have a life of their own apart from the fanatic who first spoke them. (Cromwell stepped up the genocide against the Irish far beyond his predecessors.)

Once in awhile, with the wind at my back and luck on my side, I don't miss the mark quite so widely as usual.

I look at the quote somewhat like "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "ObamaCare". Both started as perjoratives but were adopted by the targets and worn with pride. We've simply taken the words, cleansed them with a new beginning, and carried on.
...................................

My favorite Irishman in history, Michael Collins, dealt with the British in the best way possible at the time, signing the Treaty of Partition. It was not a surrender but rather buying time to regroup and resume. Yet as he said, "I've signed my own death warrant." De Valera May-He-Rot-In-Hell-Forever saw to that. Even my father swore and spat the few times he ever mentioned the latter's name.

Please forgive me if I sound like I'm preaching to the choir. Don't mean to. It's just that MC was a saint in our house; in addition to being warrior and statesman, he was a real policy wonk, having designed the modern Irish state from the ground up, which most people seem to forget now. Sort of reminds me of another surprising policy wonk, Al Franken, far better known as comedian and liberal champion extraordinaire. I take his newsletter although I don't live anywhere near his district.

OK, I'm out of breath now. Carry on!
