They shut down the government.
Paychecks stopped. Employees sent home.
They will pay no price for what they did.
And they will be making another mess before long.
They will not stop until such time as they are a real minority in congress, and that won't happen any time soon. So expect more and even bigger problems.
Besides that, their companies count your vote. Or discount your vote might be a better way to explain why there are so many teabaggers in congress.

(15,262 posts)Now, they may have made it look like only the Teabaggers did this, but make no mistake .... it was all of them. Let's NOT be naive about this apparent factionalism.

(13,685 posts)They have conspired to destroy this country and they are still in a position of power. Denying the obvious is not going to help defeat them. I think Obama has finally learned to not play along with them. It only enables them.

(36,418 posts)in the deals that were made that emerged as the Sequester and the selective shutdown. The Teahadists get the blame publicly, but the mainstream Centrist leadership of both parties made this possible and inevitable. It's Austerity by Default, and it's no accident.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Why is it you are not like all the other replies on this thread who think this was not planned?
This has been coming for a long time. And it sure is interesting to see that the military did not share in the furloughs. They extremists know who butters their bread.
It's not over. Too bad so many here are so shortsighted. Just allows the cons to conspire to cause more problems.

(36,418 posts)had the votes to be able to implement it by simple refusal to deal -- that much was predictable and almost inevitable. Once the Sequester was in place, the Teahdists were emboldened to use the same tactic on the Budget. Again, not exactly unforeseeable.
Sequester cuts to social programs are now Locked In. It's simply Austerity by Default (or threat thereof), and it worked.
If I'm wrong, tell me how it was otherwise. Otherwise, take your hat and wrap a sandwich.
This should be an OP

(11,619 posts)Shutting down the government has heavily damaged Republican credibility. Their votes and the damage the cause will be highlighted in next years elections. If they try this shit again in January or February, it will make it worse.

They wanted to make a mess, they made a mess, and they will not pay a price. They have way too much support.
Can anybody here tell me what price they will pay anytime soon?
They will be back in a few months. Everybody in denial of that fact is enabling them.

Under what set of circumstances was this going to end with the Tea Party members of Congress not still being in Congress....for now.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)What did they lose?
Your personal slam on me is exactly how the teabaggers operate. You are just enabling them. They are influencing the moderates. Only the real Left now stands in their way. Because we still see the reality.
onenote
(42,703 posts)The Tea Party brand remains strong amongst their true believers, but a large swath of the republican party is no longer going to simply say "how high" when the Tea Party says jump and this defeat, along with the likely (barring any unforeseen developments) loss of the governor's mansion in Virginia next month will reinforce the fact that the repub party is in disarray and unable to rally the support they need to win statewide (or national) elections.
Moreover, if/when the House teapartiers start with extreme nonsense during the next budget/debt ceiling battles, a lot of repubs will be much quicker to separate themselves from those efforts.
Oh, and you can take your purity principle and go hang out at the Tea Partiers pity party.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Which shows you elections mean not much.
Your dreaming of electoral victories, while slamming the Left and causing division against the only real force opposing the teabaggers, is par for the course of the moderates and centrists. Bad company you keep.

(9,893 posts)but I also don't think they lost. They took a big chance just to see what would happen. They didn't get their way this time, but they will be back, and they will continue to get stuff from Dems. Not for one moment do I think this is anything to them but a battle lost. There's still the war.
I'm kind of surprised at the short-sightedness of the responses here.

(26,060 posts)They not only trashed their own brand but the brand of the entire GOP. You try and sound like you know what you're talking about and then post crap like "they will pay no price" - pray tell, how far into the future are you capable of seeing and could I have the winning lottery numbers for the Powerball? You want to wallow in negativity, knock yourself out.
Chan790
(20,176 posts)The Tea Party lost this fight.
*They got nothing they wanted.
*The people that pay their bills and astroturf for their movement, pulled the plug. Literally...this dried-up the big corporate money behind them. The Kochs denounced them. Wall Street turned their backs. The GOP long knives have come out in the hands of their punditry cadre. If money and a voice are power in politics...they have not money, pulpits or power.
*The GOP lost public support down to "staffers and blood relatives" levels...and internally to the party, the blame for that is being laid entirely on the Tea Party.
*They sparked a GOP civil war...and they lost that war. That's not insignificant...they went to war with the people that hand out committee assignments and dole out speaking time and have all the power to put them in positions to not get reelected...and they lost, badly.
*They're probably going to pay for this at the polls; both primaries and general elections. The electorate has short memories but if they pull the same things in early 2014, any subsequent CR and debt fights will be taking place in the middle of election season, right before primaries, then on the doorstep of Election Day. The Democrats and their own GOP leadership (the one that they went to war with and who is now laying this mess at their feet) will make sure of that.
