My Offer is This: Nothing

My Offer is This: Nothing

Josh Marshall

Many Republicans knew this was going to be a disaster going in. But just as many totally misread Obama. Just days before the shutdown numerous high profile Republicans insisted there was no way Obama wouldn't negotiate. But probably the key driver of this drama has been President Obama's refusal to negotiate over raising the debt ceiling.

Yes, there's been some back and forth here at the end, but as begging like this suggests, it's mainly been to sort of out terms of surrender. But that refusal has defined the entire standoff.

That forced first Republicans and then House Republicans and finally the rump caucus of 50 to 80 House fire-breathers to stand alone with outrageous demands. By not engaging they destroyed themselves.

<...>

It's far different, in many ways goes to the right-wing fever-dream fantasy Obama. But this classic scene does capture some of it.

going to be a disaster going in. Even the ones that supported it - will be backpedaling to say that they knew it was going to be a disaster going in. The game now is - how do I save face and get back into the good graces of my constituency?

Remember the Alamo. Remember 9/11.

But most importantly voters - Remember the Government Shutdown of 2013 - and vote in 2014 to remove the Repugs that almost took us over the fiscal cliff.

We need some bumper stickers and t-shirts now to remind people.

How about - "I Survived The Government Shutdown 0f 2013 - But My Congressman Won't"

So, you're telling me that you opposed this action from the start. That you knew is was a bad idea, that it would never work, and that it would be a disaster for your party and do harm to the country? Then WHY did you do it? Peer pressure? You were being bullied by a minority in your party? You're elected to LEAD for gods sake! You should have stood up and done what was best for the country, and incidentally also for your party! Why in the hell would anyone vote for you to be in a leadership position in this country if you have already proven your weak willed spinelessness? Answer that.

Prez:
"YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!!!"

I did think of the Godfather scene last week though, a real real classic.
