For the good of the county, drop the Tea Party and the Hastert Rule.25 Tea Party Reps are hardwired to vote no on any compromise. Boehner has lost control of the Tea Party caucus and he needs to throw them overboard. Get the country running again. There is room for compromise between President Obama and Boehner. We can find common ground on immigration, more efficient spending, a jobs bill, protecting the environment, etc. this shutdown exposed the Tea party as obstructionist, let them have their third party of hate to themselves. A close to even split between republicans/red state democrats vs the left leaning democrats in the House will lead to less dysfunction and more progress. Drop the Tea!

Under the rules of the House, the Speaker schedules floor votes on pending legislation. The Hastert Rule says that the Speaker will not schedule a floor vote on any bill that does not have majority support within his/her party even if the majority of the members of the House would vote to pass it. The rule keeps the minority party from passing bills with the assistance of a small number of majority party members.

(35,340 posts)Hastert Rule but didn't know what it was. After reading Wikipedia I see it is not a real rule just sort of a verbal agreement. Like our Union reps always said when they got caught up in some scheme they cooked up with management "there are no verbal agreements" you can't prove it.

(338 posts)Work towards bipartisan bills. His leadership can bring votes without a majority of republicans. They can work with right leaning democrats first, then with Pelosi if they need more votes. They can actually get bills to the Senate that stand a better chance of passing if they are bipartisan. He did it for Hurricane Sandy funding.
There seems to be at least 12 to 15 democrats who will jump sides to Boehner without much effort.
