The 295 artists, bands and music industry luminaries in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will get some new neighbors in April.
The Rock Hall on Wednesday released the names of the 16 artist and performer nominees for the Class of 2014. About 600 people current inductees, historians, critics and music industry pros will decide which five to seven of the 16 will make it. On top of that, the Rock Hall will induct at least one and possibly two nonperformer Ahmet Ertegun Lifetime Achievement Award winners, as well.
Those 600 will get some help from fans, too. The Rock Hall once again will conduct online fan polls via rockhall.com/vote, rollingstone.com and usatoday.com to determine which five artists will earn spots on a fan ballot. That ballot will be submitted as a single ballot alongside the rest. And while it may be a "one fan, one vote'' sort of thing, it's key to note that some of the bigger winners on the 2013 poll are back on the ballot this year.
Here are the bands and performers the pros and fans will be voting on, courtesy of biographical information provided by the Rock Hall:

(5,611 posts)Yes and Deep Purple, two of the most important and influential bands in rock history, should have been in years ago. In fact the omission of Deep Purple has been a bad joke for years. Nirvana I believe is just now eligible (25 years after the first album's release I believe).
I am still waiting for Joy Division/New Order (there is precedent for inducting both incarnations of the band as with Parliament/Funkadelic). They are also one of the most influential bands -- starting "dark" new wave, post punk, and alternative rock. Love the Manchester bands!

Nirvana are going to get in on the first ballot, obviously.
Peter Gabriel (who is already there as a member of Genesis, his solo career and especially his part in bringing world music to the attention of Western audiences are worthy of induction on his own though).
The Replacements (imagining the late '80's/'90's alt-rock scene without the Replacements having come first is like imagining the NYC proto-punk scene c. 1975 if the Velvet Underground never existed).
NWA (without whom West Coast hip-hop over the past 25 years or so is unimaginable; whatever one may think of hip-hop generally and the derided "gangsta rap" genre specifically, it's hard to deny their influence on a hugely popular musical genre that's eclipsed guitar-driven rock in youth culture).

I have an abiding fondness for Cat Stevens. I don't really know how influential he was, but his stuff still sounds so.. clean to me as well as resonating emotionally.

(42,704 posts)The absence of the Moody Blues from the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is especially inexplicable. The band has been active for nearly 50 years and still has three members who have been with the band for over 45 years. In the US, they had top ten albums in three different decades. In the UK, they had a string of 8 consecutive top ten albums in a 13 year period. Not saying that other bands on the list of those nominated aren't deserving, but more deserving than the Moody Blues?
