You are all completely insufferable. Mark Morford

Do you know the one thing we’ve all learned from the Interweb? Everyone is awful. Every group, demographic, neighborhood, type of car, time of day, choice of outfit, weather system and coffee shop preference – despicable, shameful, embarrassing, stupid. Don’t believe it? Just ask. If you dare.

We have become, in short, a nation of haters and trolls – or rather, a nation that numbly accepts hating and trolling, bullying and shaming as a part of everyday life, de rigueur and sort of built in to the cultural framework. It’s just who we are now.

Is it not true? We seem to breathe in this rank perfume of hate as if it was always there, as if there was no other option than to allow increasingly huge swaths of society to be mean as snakes, cowardly and hissing anti-everythings, spitting endlessly into the wind. As if we had no other choice – when choice is, in fact, the only thing we really have left.

Do you love comic books? Anne Hathaway? Newspapers? Solar energy? Are you pregnant? A new mom? Stay-at-home dad? Do you like bikes? Dubstep? Kombucha? Grass-fed steak? Modern art? Love your iPhone 5S? Use Twitter? Been to Europe? You’re a clueless moron. Hey, just read the comments under any review or article about any of those topics, pretty much anywhere.

Wait. Let us not be overly fatalistic and depressing. Maybe this Net-fueled hate bubble will reach critical mass and ultimately burst? Maybe a national recoil is imminent? After all, a society fed primarily by meanness and spite only has two options: collapse, or transformation. And I’m forever convinced love and kindness will always prevail. The sad thing is, they’re rarely the loudest voices in the room.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]It was pretty hilarious watching him read some of the hateful comments to be found on just about anything, including cheesecake.

It's possible to find anything on the internet, the beautiful and the ugly. We learn to hone our abilities to choose or reject, to attend or ignore, to engage or to disregard.

The haters display, in Morford's words, "straight-up meanness for its own sake, just to get attention." It is precisely why I categorically deny them the attention they crave and refuse to give them any. at. all.

Yup, haters gonna hate, so let them wallow in it all alone.

We are not all haters - there are lots of decent, thoughtful and intelligent people posting on the net.

The very reason I use my IL: the sexists, the misogynists, and the verbal bullies do not warrant my regard.
