I have family in Tennessee...my wing of it just moved to Oregon in 1910 or so.

I have southern blood in my veins.

Yes, I see what the politicians down there have done and continue to do.

But I still believe, I have to believe, that, at the deepest level, the people of the South have to be better than the political class there.

And that, at some point, that goodness, that deeper sense of what is right and just, will have to come to the surface.

The South of 1964 is not the South of today. And the South of today, with its flaws, will not be the South of forever.

It simply can't be.

Too many good people live there to let things stay as they are.
