After a day of furious negotiating with fellow Republicans over how to tweak a bill he had unveiled in the morning, it was left to stunned members of his leadership team to confirm to reporters that the vote had been canceled.
Theyre trying to work it out, said Representative Greg Walden, the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman.
Pete Sessions, chairman of the Rules Committee, kept in character and put a positive spin on an obvious disaster for the GOP.
Boy, when even the National Review can't find a silver lining...

(68,644 posts)The canceled vote was no Twilight Zone episode, however, but something far too familiar. Republicans eagerly compared it to the fiscal cliffs famous Plan B episode, when Boehner brought lawmakers into a closed-door meeting in the Capitol basement, said the serenity prayer, and told them the vote was canceled.
The Christian rite accompanying legislative chaos today was Florida representative Steve Southerlands rendition of Amazing Grace all three verses, said Representative Michael Burgess (Texas) afterwards in amazement.
But Southerland is an undertaker by trade, and the song is normally sung at funerals. Its hard not to sees todays failure as the death of the House GOPs role, in at least this standoff.

(1,425 posts)All THREE verses? I remember 5 verses of "Amazing Grace" printed in the Baptist Hymnal. I can remember 4 verses by heart.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound . . .
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear . . .
Through many dangers, toils, and snares . . .
When we've been there 10,000 years . . .
And I'm an atheist.

(26,449 posts)I never want to hear that song played on the glorious pipes!
First the scale it is written in is normal, not the pentatonic native to the pipes. Second, it fails as a lament entirely.
There are much better laments written for an instrument designed to strike fear into the enemy and versatile enough to support a lively fling.

His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
That last one I don't remember ever singing, tho
