Is he a kamikaze?
Is he trying to save his speakership?
Is he shitfaced?
Does Jim Demint have pictures of him having a carnal congress with a goat?

(2,679 posts)He is acting kamikaze style because he is drunk because he hopes the only way to save his speakership because while the person(s) may or may not be Demint, someone probably has some dirty pictures or evidence of some illegal money or something that would put him in a compromising position. Probably happened when he was drunk.

In fact the last time there was a debt ceiling issue the Republicans tried to pass something in the House only to find out that they didn't have the votes. John Boehner just doesn't have the skill, respect or power necessary to corral his party. Granted, it's hard to corral the certifiably stupid as so many of the Tea Party types are, but still Boehner should be able to figure out if he does or doesn't have enough votes prior to word getting out.

(879 posts)where Obama can share some of the blame. He should have NEVER negotiated with the Republicans in 2011. That validated the strategy they tried to employ this time.
Basically, I think they didn't believe him when he said, "you ain't getting shit." They shut the government down and then thought, when that didn't work, that threatening the debt ceiling would cause the President to cave. Didn't happen. So then, as an exit strategy, they kept lowering their offer, thinking, "well surely he will go for this", but it never happened, which he made crystal clear from the beginning, but they were too daft to listen to.
Today was his last gamut to try and do that, but the Dems held firm. He has been sending out right-wing bills and getting them supported by only Reps. Today, he tried to go with a compromise bill, figuring he could pick off some Dems wanting to avoid default, knowing that some Reps wouldn't vote for it.
But Pelosi is a real leader, and her troops are in line, so they extended the middle finger and he was stuck. But he was trying to do today was to get enough support from Dems and Reps to pass through a compromise bill. But the Dems weren't having it and the conservative Reps weren't either, so it died, again.
Now, he is just going to wait for the Senate, and then rubber stamp it. But what was he doing? He was expecting Obama to cave because he did in 2011. Obama learned from that and knew that even the slightest concession would validate this strategy, and you can't continue to do that, so he drew a line in the sand and held firm. Boehner learned a lesson this time.

(802 posts)"Speaking on David Pakman's radio program on Monday, Ney -- who resigned from Congress in 2006 after being implicated in the notorious Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal and later spent 11 months in jail -- recounted an incident that he included in his recently published book, "Sideswiped: Lessons Learned Courtesy of the Hit Men of Capitol Hill."
"We were over in Jordan ... and there was a certain staffer and we were sitting there ... and we were complimenting this staffer of Boehner's on what a good job he did, and John had a glass of wine and he had a cigarette and he was looking over and he goes, 'Yeah, he's a good guy. I think he's a fag,'" Ney recalled.
"It really shocked me, the way he said it I guess is what did it the most," Ney said.
Ney's depiction of Boehner in the book is unfavorable to say the least. In one passage, he claims that Boehner was "a chain-smoking, relentless wine drinker who was more interested in the high life -- golf, women, cigarettes, fun, and alcohol." Ney also claims that Boehner lied to him with promises of a job and legal defense before encouraging him to resign. Ney stepped aside, but received none of the alleged support from Boehner, he claims."

(6,008 posts)It seems that he has well and truly learned it. I have to respect the fact that he admits that giving concessions to the prior debt ceiling increase was a mistake, and I hope that once we weather this crisis, that the lesson sticks.
